COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
-If you are looking for a new treadmill "Do your homework" and research what you want to achieve and what are your preferences (treadmill, Elliptical, Bike, Incline trainer) because there are plenty, I mean plenty of brands and models and of course that determines $$$$ price.
-Our preference was a treadmill, so we bough a Proform 500ZLT (That''s the name here in Australia) I guess in USA has different name but now you have a better idea just to give you the full picture of our review.
-Not all brands are ifit compatible. Visually you can see the "ifit symbol" on the main panel of the machine (please see picture attached) or you can check on their web site
LACK OF INFORMATION
-The idea of having a "virtual trainer" was exciting; unfortunately the lack of information of how to use it is very disappointing and time wasting.
-We have learnt basically by trial and error, so that is one of the reasons why this review is so long.
-The package doesn''t have any instructions either their web site.
-There are many forums on the web but not real references what so ever!
HOW IT WORKS AND WHAT IT IS
-What is ifit? ifit is a Sd card that has a recorded voice of Jillian Michaels which works by levels (from 1 to 17) and by goals/workouts (weight loss, wellness, performance and power walking) and by fitness machines (Treadmill, elliptical, bikes &incline trainers). -Where do you get them? Well here in Australia, the fitness equipment providers sells machines and offers you a package which include them, other wise you can download here: ifit workout download center I haven''t try yet to download any of them, since we are still on level 2 but I hope the downloads are allow from an international server and payments through an international card.
-All workouts are designed for 8 weeks, 3 times per week. To give you an idea, let''s say you are on Monday (level 1, first week, fist day): Insert SD card on the ifit slot then it will starts automatically and you will hear her voice which tells you "start" so you push "start button" and then your work out for 20 minutes and then the machine (this case a treadmill) changes speed and incline automatically and her voice is your companion during the session then 5 minutes before the end of your workout, the program gives a cool down time, so you don''t finish like you are dying without breath and then the machines automatically stops.
-So in order to reach next level your second day. Following previous example, let''s say Wednesday (level 1, first week, second day) Insert SD card on the ifit slot, then click on button "up" (it doesn''t say it but you can see a little arrow besides of ifit slot, please see pictures attached) and then you can hear these: "Hi I''m JM...we are in week 1, Program 2 of loosing weight Level 1" So you now you are on day 2 and again incline and speed will automatically change for 20 minutes. So next day on your program you do the same until you reach 8 weeks.
Never...never... ever, expose ifit SD card to magnets even the treadmill key can damage digital information.
-Maintain ifit SD card away of sweaty hands and water.
-In order to have an account on ifit web site it''s necessary to have an activation code which is located on the back of the membership card included in the package with your wifi module. If you are registering a machine that does not use a module the activation code is located in the literature packet with the user manual.
CONCLUTION
We are very focused on lose weight having said that we didn''t give up trying to find information either learning how to use this system (ifit virtual trainer). If you are willing to discipline your self and reaching your goals this is a good beginning, remember nothing is free in this life, someone has to give and in this case a fitness machine and a virtual trainer could be an investment for your present and future health.
I can say after experiencing level 1 (Now I''m on Level 2, my husband still Level 1) we are delighted and vey happy with the workouts of ifit.
One of the most difficult part is the BEGINNING... our treadmill was still in the box after 6 months since we bough it and then it took us other 3 months after it was assembled to really start our workouts!!! And later finding the right information and learnt how to use it was the other excuse to really start.
So if we did it, you can do it as well!! So it doesn''t matter if you are using ifit or not the beginning of a new habit is the most difficult thing and this system is just a helper to achieve a new healthy habit. I''m sure everyone can reach their goals however discipline and constancy are necessary. So GOOD LUCK everyone!!! I used my card until one day the card didn''t work. It was my fault. I killed the card!
Your nordic trac machines have a magnet on the key that you clip to your clothing and start the machine with. They also have those handy trays to place your treadmill accessories. If you put that magnetized key next to these cards, you WILL wipe out all the data on your card.
I bought new cards (I recommend you try Jillian Michaels series) and made backups just in case I erase these as well.

Really love this add on. Basically what an iFit card is, its a little card you put into your machine (in my case, an elliptical), your machine needs to have the ifit slot for this to work. Anyways Each of these iFit cards have 24 workouts, so far they have all varied and challeneged me a bit as I am just getting back into shape.The iFit automatically changes your resistance and decides what you are going to be doing for your workout. You can change it yourself if you want more or less resistance. While the program is doing this, Jillian Michaels is coaching you on, telling you to hang in there and try your best, and she also gives you little tidbits of information, like staying hydrated can improve your metabolism by 3% and other facts and tips and tricks.
I am REALLY not a workout fan, but I actually look forward to these sessions. I have heard that the Level 2 set is even better. I own it but am doing all 24 workouts on Level 1 before I review it.
This really is basically a personal trainer for you. I would recommend it to people who have a compatible machine and aren''t really sure what they want to do on their elliptical and like to hear encouragement when working out.
One draw back is that everything on these cards is preset. Yes, you CAN vary your workout youa rein control of the machine if you want to make changes, but I think people are not that likely to do it. If you don''t like someone else setting your workout up for you, this might not be for you. To me I love it so its a pro not a con.

After 4 workouts of level 1 I essentially shut down the volume. The audio comments were repetitious, sometimes the exact same phrase repeated 4 times within 30 minutes, often within 10 minutes of each other. Instructions NOT to run, then later saying that the intensity would be increased to 5 MPH and then to run (which is never did). I finished level 1 in less than 8 weeks and by the 18th worklout, found the 3.5 MPH less than rigorous. To my surprise, Level 2, workout 1 starts at 4 MPH, moves to 5 MPH within the first 6 minutes, then up to 6 MPH within 10 minutes, all with slope of 5%10%. TOO MUCH! At the same time, the audio instructions state NOT to run or bounce. Who in world can walk at 6 MPH? That''s a 10-minute mile walking??? There''s no way to walk at that speed, especially not the long strides stipulated by the instructions. Also, the workout 1 has a speed of 5 -6MPH for over five minutes. How could anyone be expected to accomplish such an extreme workout change between level 1 and level 2? Even though the slope might reduce to 5%, who could realistically more from the Level 1 3.5 MPH to Level 2''s 6 MPH within the first 6 minutes? I have been exercising for 20 years, including 8 years running, and I know that there is something very wrong and dangerous with this system. Jillian should be ashamed!
