RAD Cycle Products Indoor Portable Magnetic Work Out Bicycle Trainer

RAD Cycle Products Indoor Portable Magnetic Work Out Bicycle TrainerPros

* Installation took 10min. Just take out the back axle and install one that is provided. The bike will then fit into the stand.

* Inexpensive. This is one of the less expensive models

Cons

* About as loud as a vacuum cleaner when mtn bike tires are installed

* DiscountTommy is giving people $17 in merchandise to write 5 star reviews on Amazon. To quote from an email they sent me: "We will send you a FREE RAD Bike Hoist for writing a product review on Amazon... All you need is an Amazon.com account and a willingness to write a 5 Star review for our product."

Operation

* Resistance is increased by a) twisting a knob that pushes a roller against the tire or b) increasing your bicycle gear.

* With mountain bike tires on, the unit is about as loud as an old loud vacuum and it is impossible to carry on a conversation while in use. I am able to hear 2 sounds. One is the humming sound of my tire against the roller. That is expected and can be probably be reduced by changing the tire. The 2nd sound is more abrasive and sounds like a combination of a vacuum and the sound of running a flat, bristle, plastic comb over an edge. It isn''t clear how much changing the tires would improve the noise.

I consider this a reasonable product if the noise is not a problem.

This is the first bike trainer that I''ve owned, so I don''t have much to compare it to, but I really like it. It was a great value for the price, and simple to put together and use. It''s a little louder than I expected (thus the 4 out of 5 stars) when using it with my mountain bike, but it works well. If you purchase this product, or any other bike trainer for that matter, you probably want something to hold the front tire in place and raise it up a bit. Otherwise it feels like you are slightly sloped downhill. Overall, I''m happy with it.

The unit came pre assembled, just have to open the legs and adjust the feet cups (they rotate to offer different height settings to level the unit) I didn''t need the supplied speed axle, as it was the same exact one as already equipped on my Trek 7100. It isn''t silent, but not deafening either. I would like to have seem a little more precision built into the rotational parts to quiet it down a bit, but I guess that''s whats another few hundered dollars gets you so I''m not complaining. If you live in an apartment you might consider another model as this will have your neighbors banging on the walls or ceiling with a broom handle. Also, I tried using my wireless headphones linked to my laptop in another room to listen to music from the internet and when I started pedaling the sound went all screwy until I stopped. I pedaled up to 90rpm and my headphones died altogether. I stopped they came back on... pedaled again... died again, thus is the penalty for a magnetic trainer... beware if you have wireless gear nearby, it will interrupt it!

Other than that, the unit provides steadily increasing resistance with each gear change and step up in rpm but settles in nicely once you hit your pace. It doesn''t however increase resistance the faster you pedal. It only seems to offer an increase based on the higher gear you select. In other words when you up shift it doesn''t just let you freewheel like you''re going downhill, it will resist accordingly, but will level out as if you''re going along a nice flat stretch of road.

I set my bike for about 80-90 rpm at approx 16mph and ride for an hour. It definitely gives me a work out and I''m sweating nicely by the end and my heart rate is right where I''m comfortable.

For the money, well worth it. Highly recommended. It would gain the 5th star for added quietness.

Just received my trainer today, used it and I love it. I was weary about low costing trainers but took a chance on this product, the frame is very solid and easy to use and adjust. One issue I had was with my bike and not the trainer. My Roadmaster Mt. Storm mountain bike did not come built with a quick release rod, after a lot quick research I finally decided to use the rod that was already equipped to my bike and hook it up to the trainer and it worked just fine. If you''re looking for a good trainer then buy this one. It does make some noise but I''m not worried about it, it makes noise mainly because of the type of tire on my bike

I just received my RAD Magnetic Bike Trainer and I really, really like it. I think it''s a fantastic value for the money. The actual installation of the product is quite simple release your rear tire rod and replace it with the one provided with the machine. Mount the bike into the trainer, inserting the rear tire rods into the sides of the trainer, tighten a few nuts and you''re done. So, I hopped on my bike but I couldn''t get the wheels to turn unless I stood up on the pedals and put all my weight on it. I hopped back off and re-adjusted everything but I still had the same problem. I sat down and started turning the wheels with my hand and found that they turned just fine with my weight on the bike however, the wheels were very difficult to turn. And then I had my AHA moment. I had installed the trainer on a carpeted surface and the pile of the rug was preventing the wheels from moving freely. So, I got a flat cardboard box and put the bike on top of the box but unfortunately, that didn''t solve the problem. I then dragged the bike into the tiled hallway and discovered that the machine works perfectly when not on the carpet. So, my plan is to go to the hardware store and get some wood blocks so that I can raise the machine up off the floor by a few inches. Then, I can put the machine in the carpeted area where I want it! Also, as others have mentioned, the trainer is somewhat noisy but just turn up the TV/music and you''ll be fine.
