Buff Original Headwear

(TOP 10 REVIEWER) I am a serious runner (1200 miles per year) and over the years have collected an assortment of headbands, bandanas, and other items to keep the sweat out of my eyes. I recently discovered the UV Buff, and now this is all that I use for warm weather running. Here is why:

1. The Buff lives up to its promise of wicking moisture effectively, drying quickly, and being very breathable.

2. The fabric is very comfortable and very absorbent.

3. The Buff can be used in different configurations for head and neckwear. For running I use the "pirate hat," which takes just seconds to make if you follow the directions included on the package. What I like is that midway during my run, I can make a new pirate hat in which the perspiration drenched front winds up in the back. (Note: When you make the pirate hat the left side of the Buff becomes your skullcap. Just make sure the dry part is on the left side when you make the pirate hat for the second time).

4. With other fabrics, a "pirate hat" can make your head hot, but not the Buff because it breathes so well.

5. Although you can also make a bandana, note that the Buff does not stretch. I wear a large hat size, and found that the bandana configuration was a bit tight for me.

6. This comes in lots of colorful and interesting patterns that look great with any running outfit.

The Buff has done a great job this summer of keeping my head cool in the sun and stopping sweat from running into my eyes. I bought my Buffs online at Planet Buff, which I found had a much better selection than the sellers on Amazon, and at prices that were equal to or less than the prices on Amazon depending on the style.

Bottom line: If you a a runner you will really like this.

Update July 23, 2011: We have been having a record breaking heatwave in New Jersey where even at sunrise the temperature is in the 80s with very high humidity. I went running for a couple of hours and was drenched after the first mile. But on a 10 mile run the Buff not only kept the sweat out of my eyes (I wear the "pirate hat" so it covers my entire forehead down to my eyebrows), but also kept my head cool. This is definitely the best headwear that I have used so far for running.

Update October 25, 2011: Although cooler Fall weather has arrived in the Northeast, I still run with the Buff to keep sweat out of my eyes. It also helps to keep my head warm on cool Fall nights.

Update March 4, 2012: I have been running indoors a lot on the treadmill at my gym during this winter, and use the Buff to keep the sweat out of my eyes. So this is really useful all year round.

I have about 8 Buffs -all the UV version. They are outstanding. I wear them almost daily and for most things outdoors. I wear them to jog, bike, hike, hunt, and even play softball in the summer heat. It works great for those of us who need to cover up the head (lack of hair and fair skin don''t mix), and it can be worn in a way to cover the back of the next. Its easy to wear them under a cap if you want to, and I do a lot. Sort of turns a cap into one of those desert hats.

There are all kinds of ways to wear them, both for men and women. Its easy to create a "do-rag" or biker style skull cap, but for most things, I just throw it over my head and pull the front end all the way over my head like a ski cap. It stretches and has no seam (don''t know how they managed that) so there isn''t any irritant.

This thing dries in less than 30 minutes if you put it over a hanger or drape it on an ironing board, or something. So its easy to wash out and use and if you want to wet it to cool off, that works too. I like all my outdoor gear, but I''d probably miss this the most if I lost all mine.

I ordered a seagrass UV Blackfly Buff for use while wade fishing the sunny bonefish flats. It is recommended by several fly fishing gurus so I thought I''d try one. I''m 6''2" and have an 18" neck and this thing is just too tight to be comfortable enough to wear. It is also too tight for me to wear as a headband and especially as a balaclava when it begins to feel like a treatment for a broken jaw! I can stretch it out but it immediately returns to it''s original size and puts the squeeze on.....of course that''s a good thing if you are one of those that it fits well. I have stretched the heck out of this thing every way I could think of trying to make it fit me and it always goes back to the same size and it''s no worse for the wear of all the stretching. I thought I might have mistakenly gotten a junior size Buff but I checked the Buff USA website and mine is the adult 9 1/2 inch size. That''s as big as they come.

Even though it doesn''t fit me I think this is a great, well made product. It is extremely durable considering all the stretching I''ve done to it......it''s like a Timex in that regard. Just wish they''d consider doing an XL line. If you are a small man or a woman who loves the outdoors, I think you''ll like your Buff.

I like the Buff it''s a neat idea and for those who sweat profusely and who are out in the sun on our travels, we need something like this. I could have used it when I was in Egypt to keep sand out my face and the sun off the back of my neck. It''s got a variety of uses (look at their website for the instructional video) but I find it helpful as a headband to keep the sweat out of my eyes. Plus, making a pirate cap out of it is an added bonus.

I''ve got roughly a 18" neck, and the Buff felt a little snug around my neck. I don''t know if I have to break it in or not, but if you''re tinier than I am, you should have no problem.

As for the price... well, I wish I would have bought it from their website to save a few bucks and got a better selection. This time, Amazon marked up a product instead of reduced it.

So useful, and so lightweight. I take mine hiking, skiing, airsofting, camping, etc. You can use it as a facemask or a hat, and there''s a whole list of stuff you can make with it that came with mine (I didn''t buy mine here). I highly recommend this item. One thing to be aware of is that this is not thick and super warm. It is thin and versatile.
