Blackburn Tech Mag 6 Trainer (Adjustable Trainer)

I''ve owned several trainers before I bought this one. All the others were either too loud, too heavy to haul around, or didn''t offer enough resistance. This trainer on the other hand is 1affordable 2super super quiet! probably the quietest there is! 3not too heavy, and can be taken to races for warm-up and 4the resistance levels on this thing are fantastic! In my heaviest gear (52T chainring 14T cassette) and on resistance level 6, it requires about 450 watts of power to get it spinning at a decent pace. For most with 11T cassettes, it''ll take about 500 watts at resistance level 6. for me, staying on resistance level 3 is a tough workout (around 200 watts) I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a decent affordable trainer.

I ordered my Blackburn Tech Mag 6 Trainer on 12/19/2011 and it arrived on my doorstep today 12/21/2011 Fast Delivery! Having read the 12 reviews from others, flipping through Utube reviews, and not having purchased a trainer before. I went ahead and purchased the Mag 6 Trainer...Earlier reviews mentioned missing parts & no instructions, also mentioned the unit was rather loud. Upon opening the packaging I found the entire unit in tact, with instructions, and no missing parts. The Mag 6 was a bit tricky to put together but if you just take your time, it will take less than 15 minutes. Once the Mag 6 was assembled, my next concern was removing the skewer (sp) from my own bike and replacing it with the one that came with the Unit. It was a very simple process and took less than a minute to perform. Attaching my bike to the Mag 6 was quite easy, although I suggest you loosen the RU Adjuster Knob a bit so that it slides back to allow your tire and skewer to aline properly, then you can tighten the FastCrank Knob and Locking Nuts. After adjusting the RU Adjuster Knob ( the knob that tightens or loosens the Resistance Unit to the tire )to what I considered the proper tension, I then connected the Remote Bar Mount Resistance Adjuster to the handle bars of my road bike ( you may need to reove the plastic inserts so you can secure the Adjuster to your handle bars ). I then made adjustments to the legs of the Mag 6 so that my tire was approximately 1/2 inch from the floor. I mounted my Specialized Allez Elite and started pedaling the resistance control knob was on level 6 which made it difficult to pedal, but after figuring that out, turned the level down to 1 and it eased up quite a bit. I road for approximately 30 minutes. During this 30 minute period I went from level 1,2,3,4,5,6 and back down to 1 again. I have to say I was very impressed with this Trainer! Not having riden any other Trainer I have nothing to compare it to, but for $156.00 and delivered to my front door in 2 days, Amazing! I am only 5''4" and 150lbs. I found the Mag 6 to be very sturdy and appears to be made of quality material. The legs extend out to provide a very comfortable ride without feeling like I was going to tip over. While pedaling I turned the Remote Bar Mount Resistance Adjuster levels 4,5, and 6. Along with changing the gears on my bike, I stood up didn''t notice any change is structural stability of the Mag 6. It was not bouncing around and I didn''t feel i was going to fall over either. At the end of the ride I checked to ensure my bike was still secure to the Unit and that nothing had come loose, everything was fine! Noise level was fairly mild to minimum. although earlier reviews mentioned the Unit was noisy, I didn''t find that to be an issue. I felt the over all performance for the Blackburn Tech Mag 6 was GOOD! My only concern is the RESISTANCE UNIT (RU) housing is made of plastic. After my 30 minute ride this platic housing was extremely warm. Another concern was for the wear on my Tyre/tire? One might consider purchasing a few training tires (a friendly suggestion)because the resistance will wear your tyre/tire tread down. I''m also considering purchasint another rim and training tyre. I really enjoyed working out with the Mag 6 Trainer. I''ll have to do a follow up after a few months of good solid use. It also comes with a Life Time Warranty, if it breaks they will fix it !....I was very pleased with the Mag 6!...Hope this helps those of you who are considering one?

This is a great starter trainer, a little noisy but managable with headphones on. It came well packaged, the instructions (1 sheet front and back, like 6 languages) are not very detailed, but it''s pretty simple to put together. I was missing the quick release skewer, but was able to call the company and they sent a replacement part right away. I have a very old bike that does not have a quick release lever at all on the tires, but was able to get the bike to stay in it anyway.

Overall nice product, well made, simple to use.

I''ve been using the Blackburn Mag 6 for two weeks and can highly recommend it. Using with 700x25c Michelin Optimum road tire. Previously used the Graber mag trainer for 8 months and it fell apart. Not only that but the roller was made out of PVC and grooves appeared on the roller making for an uneven cadence. The Mag 6 roller is metal, not smooth but has a semi rough surface to prevent tire slippage. I tried several trainers from my LBS CycleOps, Kinetic and one other. The Mag 6 beat them flat out not only on price but also for construction and adjustable feet.

Tiny Con

* Handlebar tension adjuster is difficult to click from one setting to the next. Really have to twist to get it to move. Reason is you''re turning a six foot plus cable to make the adjustment at the roller. But it sure beats getting off the bike and making the adjustment at the roller.

Pretty new to biking and live up north where it is cold this time of year, so really needed a trainer. Did a little research online, at prompting of girlfriend. Got it for my birthday :) Put it together in 15 minutes (including skewer replacement) Works GREAT. Nice design.

PS: Not sure how people miss it, but instructions are taped to one of the larger pieces of styrofoam. I guess they should make them RED? I didn''t actually use them, but peeled them off and put them in a drawer with all the others...

PPS: If you have the tension adjustment to tight on the roller, the resistance changes (from the knob) will be abrupt. Loosen it until it "just" doesn''t slip when you ride. Also the knob works smoother after you turn it a few times. After a 1/2 hour ride on simulated hills (turning knob both ways, several times) It is smooth and good to go.

Next Stop: STP (Seattle To Portland) Better get back on the trainer....
