Stamina 36-Pound Adjustable Kettle Versa-Bell

Stamina 36-Pound Adjustable Kettle Versa-BellPros: Shaped (pretty much) like a traditional bell; weight changes are super quick and easy

Cons: A lot of plastic, slight rattling from the weight plates

New to kettlebell training, so I don''t have a lot of experience to rate this against other types of bells.

The handle and top of the dome that you see in the picture is metal, the red part is a plastic dome that conceals the weight plates. It seems sturdy enough for its intended use (lifting, swinging, etc.), but I could imagine shattering the plastic pretty easily if I dropped it on a hard surface. The internals seem pretty solid though. Not perfectly round, it''s slightly flattened on the sides parallel with the handle, but the top portion is round.

Weight changeover is amazingly quick, pull down a rubber bumper on the side, slide the pin out, put it back in the new hole, flip the bumper back up, and lift. Five seconds, tops, and foolproof. It has an internal weight stack, unused weights remain on the floor on an included mat.

My other first impression is that it is pretty big--think volleyball size. Doesn''t bother me, but it''s considerably bigger than the 35-pound solid bell at my gym. A typical 16-pound fitness bell would probably be a third of the size.

I live in a small two bedroom apartment and was looking for an interesting workout solution. This kettlebell was the greatest thing I found and has worked out perfectly for my small space. The kettlebell is a bit bulkier than normal kettlebells and can make certain exercises a little bit more difficult. I find my hands slipping to one side of the over-sized handle while doing one-handed exercises, which can make the swing of the bell awkward. However, I''ve remedied this by gripping the handle tighter and giving my forearms a bit of an extra workout. My other concern with the kettlebell is minor, but you can hear the weight plates in the kettlebell clinking around while you swing it. It is not loud, but can be annoying when you have a roommate trying to sleep.

Despite these two annoyances, this is easily the best/cheapest way to have a kettlebell set in your home. If you have the space and money, I would suggest buying an actual set of kettlebells. Since I didn''t have a spare $600 or the space, I bought the Versa-bell and am more than happy with this product as a consolation.

As mentioned, this adjustable kettlebell is well thought out.

It is very good for people new to kettlebells, since it allows them to train up to their "maintenance" weight with out having to purchase many separate bells.

The price is also fair, considering.

PROS:

Good handle

Good shape

Good selection gradation of weights

Secure, easy weight selection / locking

CONS:

Large size. especially at lower weight settings this is "just the way it is" perhaps the manufacturer could have made it slightly more compact

Too many screws top, bottom and lower rubber edge are screwed together irrespective of any other negatives, I would have given it five stars if the the red plastic bell was made of bullet proof Lexan or something similar, which will not shatter. In this case, one has to take care not to bang it.

The lowest weight plate sometimes sticks when it is excluded ( when 32 pounds are selected ), so you have to take care that it is not being picked up as well.

Finally, the base pad and the bottom edge trim are "rubber" which has a very strong petroleum odor after five months they still stink...

Yes, I would recommend it.

I live in a studio apartment so my space is limited. I took a chance on this item because it obviated the need for kettlebells of different sizes. It only takes a few seconds to change between exercises. The unit also comes with a 8 inch square rubber pad to store the unit which is handy for not marring tile or wood floors or making an impression in carpeting.

The exercise routines themselves are great combinations of strength and cardio workouts. I''m checking out various kettlebell DVDs at the library to find one I like to buy.)

All in all a very storage efficient and cost effective way to go. I see a long term relationship in my future!

By the way, I purchased left and right hand racquetball gloves so I don''t have to worry about the bell slipping from by grip from sweaty palms. That would be catastrophic!
