Instead of it exercising your forearm like the traditional (and largely useless) contraptions, this thing works your fingers and strengthens the hand overall. It also targets the muscle (forgive me, all you anatomy and physiology majors) that runs into your brachialis, which strengthens and thickens the upper forearm.
I think mechanics are a great example to illustrate my point. They often have stronger hands and fingers than gym rats because they utilize those muscles every day to turn, hand tighten, and grip things in very tight places and at funky angles. So beware a mechanic (which I am not) who owns a super gripper and challenges you to a friendly game of Mercy! After reading the review on the alternative technique, I was surprised to hear that people used it that way. I''ve been using the "traditional grip" and have NEVER used it upside down. But I will start, so thanks for the tip!I''ve wanted one of these for a long time. The ergonomics are not the best (it doesn''t really work the thumb), but when I stop being a girlie-man and use it, the results are excellent for my forearms. Be sure to use it both ways, with the pivot at the top and at the bottom, to work all the forearm muscles.I''ve bought all kinds of grip things and this is by far the best. It doesn''t come with a settings table but you can find one on the internet. Great range of motion and resistance levels. Feels well built. It is however really, really big and you won''t be putting it in your pocket. Other than that its great. This provides a very wide range of resistance that can be adjusted in increments of about 7 pounds, so you can start out with a light setting and go as far as you want. The maximum resistance is 345 pounds, which should be enough for most people. Personally, I don''t understand people''s concern about slippery handles. When I squeeze the grips together, my fingers naturally must slide around the metal. So I stabilize the unit with one hand while I grip with the other, and I use a small towel across my hand to allow my fingers to slide a little and avoid tearing the skin. When I used the unit without the towel, I got blood blisters on the palm of my hand. So I''m puzzled by people who want to increase the friction. Regardless, this is a wonderful way to exercise your hand and strengthen your grip.Husband loves this! You definitely have to build up to it but you get a great forearm workout out of this. Smart buy.
