Weider Core 100 lb. Adjustable Select-A-Weight Set with Stand

Weider Core 100 lb. Adjustable Select-A-Weight Set with StandI like the idea of adjustable weights, and wanted something that took less space than my individual dumbbells that I use with P90X. I thought that these were a good value based on the name and seller. However, I received the item in a pre-opened box, and there were some quality issues even before first use.

I was initially worried about the item due to the fact that the box had obviously been opened. I didn''t want to go through the hassle of a return, so I checked the box to ensure all the parts were in the box, and they were.

When I completed building the stand and put the weights in the stand, I noticed that there was a screw on one of the weights that was loose and could not be tightened. In addition, the plastic that holds the adjustable weights in place (and are required for proper functioning) was very thin, and cracked. The quality of the plastic holder is very poor, and in my opinion, even if it was pristine out of the box, they will definitely cause problems after semi-regular use over the course of a few months.

I am attempting to return the equipment to Amazon, and Brookstone has been very slow in responding, which is another negative.

I would definitely not recommend the product to a friend, and would also caution others on Brookstone customer service based on two recent transactions. I will update if this changes.

January 17th 2012 update:

I ended up having to ship the product back to Brookstone. Brookstone credited the purchase, but the shipping was at my expense. I had to pay $129.00 for shipping back to Brookstone!!! Amazon rejected my A to Z Claim because they show the credit processed for the order by Brookstone, but do not have a way to address return shipping crediting. All-in-all a horrible experience, and a valuable lesson learned. I no longer trust the marketplace, and believe that Amazon should determine how to address these types of issues, because I am out $129 without a working product due to a defect beyond my control.

After much agony over whether to buy these or spend more on the Bowflex units, I went with these, considering the price was WAY better (with stand included, unlike Bowflex who charges 350 for the weights and another 150 for the stand), and these seemed to be less bulky like I had heard and later witnessed was an issue with the Bowflex. I was a gym rat (1 1/2 hours 5-6 days a week) before my kid was born a year ago, and have recently converted my garage into a gym with a pullup/dip station, heavy bag and now these since as most new parents find out, keeping in shape is tough with a little one... too much to do and not enough time!

Got my box today and thankfully, Weider did a great job protecting them, as UPS did their best to try and destroy it during delivery. (the box was pretty well mangled upon arrival). The weights were encased in styrofoam and there wasn''t even a scratch on them.

The stand went together in just a few minutes with ease. Then again it''s not exactly a complicated design! I was a little disappointed that the picture seems to show the stand tilting the weights up/out a little... Not the case. I will load a picture at a later time, but the weights sit flat (parallel to the floor when in the stand).

The weight selection tab seems pretty sturdy, the pin is metal and the spring inside the tab seems heavy duty. I played around selecting the different weights and it was a breeze. The weights get stuck in the stand a little when trying to lift the units out of the holders, but I''d rather have that than having the weights that get left behind falling out.

Overall I''m super satisfied, and can see these lasting quite some time! Can''t wait to get back to my old fit self!

I have looked at all the adjustable dumbbells out there and this one is I chose based on price and the Weider name. I have seen reviews of those made by Epic that complained about pins breaking and I have not had that issue at all with my Weider set. You do need to WD40 the pins and take some care when removing them from the rack but for the convenience of changing the weights, it is not a really big deal. I have had my set for over 3 months and no issues whatsoever with them. My only caveate is to take some care with them, and ensure you don''t drop them since some parts are plastic and they will most likely break. All in all this is a great buy and if you don''t want to have them shipped, Sears has them in stock in most outlets if you live near one. Great set and perfect for P90X. By the way, I highly recommend P90X too.

Bought mine and used for about 1 year. the mechanism that holds the weight plates in place began to fail. A weight fell out in mid-rep and hit the floor and broke in half. Called to get a replacement, $111.50 each plate plus shipping. So now I have a 50lb dumbell and a 47.5 dumbell. Don''t buy these spend the extra and get the bowflex ones, they stand by their products. If I would have spent the extra money I would still have 2 50lb dumbells.

Mine came defective as well. In the case of mine, the pin on one of them was stuck. I spent about 20 minutes of jiggling before it settled into the -rightplace and I was able to change it. I figured it was fine and I had just placed it wrong, so I changed it to the weight I wanted, and then it became stuck again. So I jiggled it again, wriggled intensively at 50 lbs until I could remove it from the tray, having to exert so much force that I hurt myself.. and then placed it down again, where it immediately became stuck again, the pin included.

I would have returned it for a replacement of the same unit, but the reviews seem to indicate having them defective upon arrival is pretty common.

I purchased a set of powerblocks at the post exchange and got a 100$ giftcard, so it worked out well. I''m just kind of sad that these didn''t work out for me.

OH! The box is pretty heavy with everything coming in one singular box, I think it was 140 lbs or something, so your delivery person may not be strong enough for it. Mine was a petite female fed-ex lady, and she needed some help. ...As I have a back problem, I''m pretty glad my husband was there to help out.

The pin on the plastic feels cheap and easy to break, so I''m really not surprised it came in this condition. The plates look good, and though they are bulky still felt quite manageable.

Putting it together was easy, and the base seemed sturdy. I think if one got a working set, they would be pleased with it, but as the selecttech are going for an even lower price right now, they may be more pleased by them.
