New Balance N4 PearlI did a ton of research on HRMs before purchasing one for myself. I finally found the N4, which seemed to be the best deal and the least bulky (they say they make these things for women''s wrists and they are giant). This watch is a slim fit, nothing bulky and works flawlessly. It took me 10 minutes to set up the target heart rate zones with the directions. It''s so simple to use and it always gives accurate results compared to the really expensive ones we can check out at our gym on campus. I love it. The strap is comfortable and comes with an elastic band so you''re not wearing one of those plastic straps during your workout. It fits well and isn''t slipping while you''re working out. I can''t even feel it when I work out.

The watch is waterproof, but obviously the strap is not.

It stores up to 9 workouts, but I haven''t been able to figure out how to store multiple workouts. I just keep erasing the first workout and saving the latest. I''m searching for a forum to figure it out. Other than that, I haven''t had any trouble with it.

It''s only $45 at REI and you can take it out of the case and look at it and mess around with it there, which was nice.

I am very happy with my purchase. I''ve owned Polar HRM''s in the past, but got frustrated that you have to send the equipment in to get the battery changed. I took a chance on this New Balance f4 and I''m happy I did. Unlike Polars, you can replace the transmitter batteries yourself, and for the watch batteries it just says to take to a watch technician. It has good features- calories burned based on your height/weight/heartrate, which is a feature that was important to me. My only complaint is that it''s not really intuitive to get set up to use. (Maybe I''m too used to user-friendly iPods, etc.) But the direction book helped me navigate no problem.

I bought this monitor back in August when I needed that extra push and I absolutely LOVE it! It has an alarm, calorie counter, and can even store up to 10 workouts! The only issue I have had is that I have to replace on of the nodules that pop into the side when you put it on. I wrote New Balance and they told me to contact the company that distributes this. Great service and I found the part for $5! LOVE it! I recommend this monitor to anyone who wants to pump it up and see what they are putting out. I have used it in spinning class, body pump, running, etc. and don''t even notice it! Great fit and great motivator! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

I have had a Polar heart rate monitor for years (5+) and after 2 battery changes, the watch battery is dead again and the chest strap broke. So I did a lot of research in search of a new heart rate monitor, which I find to be a great motivator to get me to work out consistently and at the right intensity to meet my weight loss goals. I wanted a monitor that would work reliably but also look good and not be too bulky. I had it narrowed down to the Timex Personal Trainer but when I saw the New Balance N4 for women, I just loved the look more. Not knowing too much about it and after reading the few reviews I was able to find about it, I decided to take a chance and bought it. I got it at Target for $59 on sale. I have loved it from day 1! It is easy to program, easy to use, good looking, comfortable and reliable. My biggest concern was interference; I used to have some issues with my Polar with interference from my iPod/iPhone. This was not the case here. The N4 continues to provide consistent readings while I wear my iPhone and the readings were also picked up by the hi-tech workout equipment at my local gym. The watch looks good by itself so it''s like getting 2 products in one. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking to purchase a heart rate monitor.

I typically do elliptical workouts and workout dvds at home, and this is fantastic for helping me find out how hard I am working and get a better estimate of my calories burned. It lets you put in your gender, age, height, and weight and can beep when you get into your target zones (though I have that off). It allows you to save the data of 9 workouts at once, and it''s on the data area that you can find out how much time you spent in the fat-burning zone of your workout, your average and highest HRM, the time, etc. It does let you toggle between viewing calories burned, the timer, your average heart rate, and other data while still showing your current heart rate and I typically leave it on either the timer or the calories burned screen and use my current HRM to tell me if I can push harder. The chest strap itself is part rubberized plastic (with the electrodes and trasmitter), part elastic (the adjustable part), and it can feel uncomfortable if worn too tight, but I find it fine.

I have not tried this in a gym, so I''m not sure how it would perform with other HRMs around it, but it definitely doesn''t do crazy stuff (like reading a way too high or too low heart rate) around my elliptical and ipod stereo in the basement or with my tv and dvd player on upstairs, and that''s fine with me. I''ve never had issues with it not picking up a signal either (I''ve seen that as an issues in reviews for other chest-strap HRMs when comparing models), but I always put water on the readers part of the chest strap before I put it on.

The only reason I would possibly "upgrade" would be for one with a GPS (I''m thinking of doing C25K after the holidays, and that would be handy for outdoor runs), but there are android apps that monitor my run, so I could just use those, if I can run them in the background with the C25K app running, at least. I know many of the Polar models have wearlink transmitters that will transmit HRM data to some of said fitness apps (like runkeeper, endomondo, sportypal, etc) and I do use a couple of those, but I''m ok with manually entering in the information from the data screen at the end of my elliptical workouts right now, and could do that with runs in the future as well. But I may look into those next time I need a HRM.

Couple other things:

-the manual says to use just warm "fresh water", NOT tap water to rinse off the chest strap after every use. Apparently the minerals in tap water can harm the electrodes or something. I have a reverse osmosis tap on my kitchen sink so I use water from that and it seems to be ok. If you''re looking for a chest strap to toss into your dedicates wash once a week, this isn''t it.

-DON''T BEND THE CHEST STRAP THE WRONG WAY. I have read of people breaking theirs within 3 months of purchase just by doing that a couple times. It is plastic and it doesn''t like that. And the hooks that attach the elastic to the transmitter do seem a bit flimsy (just because they''re small and, again, plastic), but I do my best to be careful with them and after a month, so far, so good!

Overall, I''m really pleased with this as my first HRM. The watch is easy to read and use (for me, at least), it''s cute, I have no transmission errors, and I can enter the data given onto any workout tracking site or app easily (though it isn''t integrated automatically, which may be something you''re interested in). I find myself pushing myself more and I do see improvement in my workouts and at the end of the day, that''s all that matters :)
