The fitness handles give you more options. They make some moves more challenging and others easier, so you decide if you want to invest in them or not. You don''t have to.
The only reason I''m not giving 5 stars is that I wish the pedals weren''t just bars but had real foot pads like on the original chair. Some moves require that you stand on the pedals, and they are hard and unforgiving. If you wuss out and slip off while you''re standing on the pedals, you can hurt yourself. I''m going to try ballet slippers . . . with rosin!
Nonetheless, I encourage you to try the chair. Contrary to what some folks have said, I think it is perfect for experienced exercisers, beginners, and well as those with physical issues who need restorative, intelligent movement.I ordered this from HSN to be sure I would have no issues with returns or a fake product. It took me about 45 minutes to unpack and unwrap this. It was easy to "assemble." The chair is solid and stable. It is so easy to use. Mine came with 7 workouts. Each workout is different. When I use the chair, every part of my body gets exercised arms, upper body, abs, legs. I have been using this machine for a little over a week now and I can already see some nice, toned muscle definition. The machine does not bulk you up, but makes you look leaner. If you stick with it, you will get results. I originally used the Pilates Performer to help me lose 90 pounds. It was pretty simple.
I highly recommend this system to anyone who wants to become fit, tone up, lose weight and get rid of aches/pains. It is especially good for those who have trouble getting down on the floor and back up again. I am not sure why the negative comments.

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)(COMMUNITY FORUM 04)(#1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)Pilates is popular, and with good reason. It focuses on the core, which holds up your back and keeps your entire body strong, and it doesn''t produce bulk, it lengthens and shapes pretty limbs in women. As I used to do ballet and yoga as a teenager, then martial arts, and lately, weights and aerobics, I had not previous done Pilates, but it''s related to all these fitness activities. But I have a knee problem that makes certain exercise (running, squats) problematical, so I wanted a chair-floor based routine that would not stress my joints. The Chair
The chair is fairly heavy (maybe the weight of a small livingroom armchair) and this model has the extended "sculpting handles" which are high bars with pads on top that can be used somewhat the way ballet bars are used--as a place to hang onto as you extend and raise limbs, for example, or work the spine.
There is a pad below a set of bar pedals, and springs add to the resistance of the pedals, which is where most of the work is being done. The seat is padded vinyl and the chair does fold, though with a bit of difficulty as it is, as I remarked, not light weight. It seems sturdy. I am heavy and it holds me without complaining. I do not think this would be suitable, however, if you were much taller than me (six feet) nor heavier than 250 lbs.
The springs adjust your tension, and some exercises require heavy springs, some light. You adjust them by sliding them to the front or back of a bar under the seat, and at first I was put off, thinking it was going to be a pain to keep adjusting per exercise, but it''s not bad. You can remove one spring by unhooking to reduce the tension if you are a beginner. When you get much stronger, there is a set of heavy springs, but it only suits this chair, so be warned, they do not suit other makes and styles of chair and you could damage it or get hurt.
The springs are easy to move but if you have arthritis in the hands (I have a little) this might annoy you. Likewise, the pedals are used barefoot so if you have foot problems such as Morton''s neuroma or arthritis, or plantar''s fasciitis, you might feel foot pain, thus, this machine may not be for you (do floor version instead.)
Also note, you need a yoga mat, I suggest a nice thick one, and you have to figure out how to arrange the chair to see the DVD player; I ended up using it sideways to the television as some of the workouts make you end up back to the TV.
The Workout
There are a number of DVDs that come with this chair; I worked through the introduction that demonstrates the moves, and the sculpt and tone beginner''s workout. I am older, not terribly strong, and I could do most of the workout on the proper settings, moving the springs as instructed, but I could not do a few of the workouts even on the modified beginner method (which is demonstrated by one of the three actors in the DVD.) Some people criticize the instruction as sketchy; I did not find it a problem at all and found the instructor very pleasant. I am familiar some of the moves from other sports, and some of the principles of Pilates, so I found it easy to understand even if I could not do everything at first. If you are a rank beginner, I would have to say, this is NOT for you. I''d go to a class first, before I''d buy it. If you are somewhat familiar with Pilates, and if you don''t have foot problems, I''d say it might work for you.
Other workouts are more intensive, have aerobic components and try to mix it up and challenge you, which is good. As you progress, you can vary the workout with all the different DVDs and keep from boring yourself and getting too accustomed, muscularly, to any one workout. I have not tried the others as of this writing. I will update as I get more advanced.
Summary
I did a workout and despite not being able to do two or three of the moves at all (due to my lack of strength and my current weight) I enjoyed it a lot, found it interesting, not boring, and loved the feeling of the dynamic tension and the stretching. I did sweat pleasantly during the workout and found it was so easy to pop out of bed, not even have to put on shoes and jump on the chair for first-thing-in-the-morning workout. For me, this is a time-saver and enjoyable workout. But there are issues that you must be aware of, otherwise, you''ll be looking at "how do I return this thing" and since it is big and heavy, that''s going to be an issue.
This might work in a small apartment, folded against a wall. I have it in my bedroom, pushed against the wall when not in use, and I pull it in front of the television/dvd player. Out of bed, onto the workout. No excuses......

The product was as described and all associated material was intact. However, one of the bench seat screws and its corresponding embedded nut were striped. Fortuniately I had a metric tap & die set to correct the problem.
