Schwinn A.C. Performance Indoor Cycle Trainer

Schwinn A.C. Performance Indoor Cycle TrainerI researched and considered which stationary upright to purchase for over a year, and decided three factors were of critical importance: 1) magnetic resistance, 2) minimal maintenance, and 3) flexible adjustments so I can carefully replicate the geometry of my road bike. The AC Performance is the "flagship" spin bike from Schwinn and deserves that title. It arrived fully assembled and ready to ride (just had to connect the pedals). First impression was how stable it was and the flywheel allows very smooth resistance. The magnetic resistance is analog, intuitive, and doesn''t change during the ride (my complaint with every friction-resistance bike). The ability to stop the pedals (clutch) is a luxury. My kids will occasionally get a little close while I''m riding. The resistance knob also provides a "stop" function (press the knob and the flywheel stops almost immediately); another very welcome safety feature.

I have 20 hours or so on the bike at this point and can say I don''t miss all the digital readouts. I have always trained with heart rate monitors, GPS, cadence, METS equivalence, etc, and the absence of these displays is in improvement in many waysI can pay more attention to how I feel, instead of the numbers.

I would encourage anyone interested in a high-quality spin trainer to consider the Performance. The quality is remarkable, and the ride is smooth. And if I wonder what my heart rate is, I''m not riding hard enough.

I have been spinning for about 8 years on a multitude of bikes. I bought this bike on the recommendation of one of the country''s best spin instructors (not exaggerating). It''s awesome. Very good feel of the wheel turn, great adjustability-hight, forward, backward, super comfortable saddle, easy to maintain, love the resistance variability, etc. I could go on and on. I''m guessing people who love this bike are too busy spinning to write the kinds of awesome reviews this bike deserves and generally receives on other sites.

I have had the Schwinn AC Performance Spin Bike for almost a month now. I am an avid mountain biker and I needed something to keep me active in the off-season. This was the perfect solution. With my busy schedule I find myself using the bike during riding season when I can''t get out and ride. About the bike, the most important feature is the resistance. Compared to the other spin bikes I have ridden in gyms this bike has a wide range of resistance. I found that a quarter turn on this bike was equivalent to a half turn on the other bikes. I love the MPower console, I love to push myself to the limit and find this feature helpful. It allows you to measure wattage and RPM''s and the combination results in mph. Also, there a stage feature. If you do your workout in stages you can push the stage button for each stage. Next to the display for stage there is a total feature that keeps a total of all stages combined. I love the adjust-ability of the bike which makes it easy for my wife to use the bike as well. The water bottle holders on the handlebar are a pure stroke of genius. Overall, this bike has surpassed my expectations and I am excited for the off-season for a change!

Full disclosure: Let me preface by saying I didn''t purchase this bike from Amazon. My retailer gets a new bike, takes it out of the box, inspects it, fixes known issues, calibrates it, test rides it, partly disassembles it, double boxes and over packs it, ships it to the customer, then supports the bike afterwards. The added value of my retailer is likely to bias my review to the positive, and I have never used this bike directly from the manufacturer. Saying the retailers name may not be permitted in this setting but he can easily be found online and on youtube.

Having said that, this bike (mine is 2012 model) has very solid build quality, every part is well designed, aesthetically pleasing, and built well, the welding for example is well done (if not downright sexy). This bike has very good overall fit except the handlebars can tilt about a millimeter left or right when placing your weight on either side (even when fully fastened), but it''s hardly noticeable. I do wish this bike could be made even quieter; one does hear the sound of the chain and what I presume are ball bearings or gears, but the motion is very smooth despite this-no hitches or abrasive spots, and from what I can tell it''s the normal operating sound of this kind of machine-even when calibrated. These sounds are not very loud and are easily washed out by listening to audio at a moderate volume. The magnetic adjustment is very cool and effective, if you''ve never used it you should know that it''s a big improvement over prior approaches; I would consider this a must have feature.

If your considering a spinner that you intend to keep for essentially the rest of your life (or at least 5 years) and use at least a few times per week then, I would highly recommend this bike over an inferior product that may be cheaper.

P.S. If anyone has calibrated this bike to run silently I would be grateful to hear from you.

Smooth running, solid. I like that you can quit pedaling abruptly and it sort-of free-wheels, instead of requiring you to slowly come to a stop by pedaling.
