Why I bought this over others:
1) I wanted to install in a doorway without a frame, so I needed these "shower curtain rod" style "chin up" bars.
2) Slim mounting brackets (same as GoFit Chin-Up Bar) and much slimmer than (Chinning Sit Up Bar). I was not going to rely on friction to hold up my 175 lbs.
3) Adjustable grips. Most of the other products have fixed-position grips which means that when you telescope to fit your door, you will be working out with one of your arms against the door frame not cool. This bar (and the other GoFit, linked above) have velcro grips you can move around. The Everlast is almost completely covered in foam, so you can avoid this issue.
4) Rotational handles. Compared to over-the-frame pull up bars, chin up bars (by design) have a limited range of positions these handles expand the range. This is the only chin up bar I found with additional accessories.
5) The bar is red, not shiny tacky chrome. The Everlast is grey, also a decent option.
Comments after installation:
Note the comments on the mounting brackets in reviews here and at GoFit Chin-Up Bar. The brackets are wide and they are a little tough for inserting and removing the bar.
I will add that the brackets are unforgiving to door frames / ways that are not square. My doorway is not square and I had to pry the bar into the brackets. It went in, and it is there and solid, but it is putting pressure on the wall.
The rotating handles cannot be put on or removed off the bar when the bar is in the brackets they have to be slid on. Keep this in mind. Since I will likely not be taking the bar on and off, I just left them on the bar, but I would have liked to be able to take them off, for when i just want to do chin ups.
Overall I spent a good amount of time trying to decide which way to go. The other GoFit bar (linked in this review) and the Everlast were the runner ups.
-The Everlast has those giant brackets, which I did not want protruding into the door, but they would likely be a little more forgiving to my crooked doorway.
-The other Gofit was chromed ... and really wanted to avoid that.
This is not a perfect product, but from the offerings it seems to me I made the right choice. This is a robust and simple pull-up bar that gives you additional position options because of the add-ons shown in the picture. Unlike other models, this gives you more options without the added bulk and assembly hassles.
However, attachment is probably more tedious because it requires you to mount holds for the bar at the sides of the door, using brackets each secured with 5 screws. At first, I thought 5 screws per bracket was overkill but it really gives a more secure and tight fit compared to similar models that are of the "twist-to-secure" variety.
Once installed, the brackets seem to "lock" the bar in position and it won''t twist or even move like other bars once you use it. It almost feels as if you bolted the bar directly on the door!
Highly recommended! In addition to handles, product also came with two pads to wrap around bar. Only complaint is about the brackets. The bar fits into brackets too tightly to make switching bar heights convenient.Works well. I can do multiple workouts with the handles... Hurts the hands alittle but no pain no gain. =)
