I''ve owned a different Polar watch/heart rate monitor system before. This is the first GPS unit I''ve tried. I run approximately 30-40 miles per week and bought this as I''m training up for a marathon (I''ve run two previously).

The GPS is not built into the watch in order to get the GPS functionality you have to wear the Polar G1 GPS unit (included) on your arm. Just something to be aware of that it''s one more thing you have to wear vs. the GPS unit being part of the watch. On the upside the watch itself is regular sized, and decent enough looking that you can wear it as a everyday watch.

The GPS unit locks on satellites quickly and keeps a good connection. Everyone now and then it will lose signal but requires within 9-10 seconds. The watch has a number of fitness features, but I use it only to monitor my heart rate and pace/distance.

My only grip with this unit is that the watch will only show one thing at a time for instance either heart rate, distance, or pace. My other Polar watch would show both heartrate and pace on the same screen which would save having to switch back and froth among screens.

For the cost, it''s a good training aid.

I had been using a cheaper heart rate monitor watch that was very basic and only tracked your heart rate. This watch has three modes for "losing weight" "improve fitness" and "maximize fitness". It has the user perform a resting fitness test and then enter you age and weight to determine targets each week for your workouts. The watch tracks times in each heart rate zone (1, 2 or 3). The display is easy to read and shows multiple screens while working out. I''ve used the GPS once during a bicycle ride through a park with lots of tree cover. My wife has the same ladies FT60G1 watch and they reported very different distances. This watch has made me reduce the intensity of my workouts (which is difficult to accept) but made a huge improvement in weight-loss and fitness improvement.

NOTE Be very careful with the weekly targets for each zone. It sets a time to workout in each zone and also reports the percent complete. As long as you achieve 100% or more of the time you workout in zone 1 you are fine. In zone 2 and zone 3 you must be between 100% and about 140% or it will not tell you that your goal was achieved and fail to show you a trophy display. Anything under or OVER (you worked out too long) those limits will result in the watch requesting you repeat last weeks targets.

I love this product. The feedback is not only improving my runs but allowing me to better adjust it for my heart rate. It has also added to my consistency of running. Only negative is that there was no information ahead of time that the footpod and GPS accessory can not be used simultaneously.

Also the GPS device measures the distance accurately but the device and website does not actually map your route which seems like a no brainer.

as a HRM the watch works as advertised. As a GPS the watch is terrible.

The watch helped me to learn a lot about my fitness level and really focus on areas that I needed help. That said, it lacks the ability to see HR over time or over location (when using GPS).

After getting this watch and using it for some time, I have looked at others (namely Garmin) and see that for the the price you pay for Polar you get a whole lot more and customers are generally happier with their products.

Next time I will buy a Garmin.
