ePulse2 Strapless Heart Rate Monitor Watch & Calorie Counter

ePulse2 Strapless Heart Rate Monitor Watch & Calorie CounterI bought this with high hopes, and for the most part, I''ve been satisfied. I''m not going to repeat the positives that others have mentioned here.

For me, there are two negatives:

1) Battery life: If you leave the display running, the battery runs out in less than 3 hours. I understand the battery will last longer if you set the display to "on demand". However, since I''m a bicyclist who regularly takes 50 mile + rides, this is not a very convenient option.

2) No memory. My cyclometer, which costs quite a bit less than the ePulse, keeps the stats for the last ride in memory. This does not. If the unit shuts down because the battery ran out, you''re SOL.

I suspect that in 3 years or so, we''ll be able to get a version that''s cheaper and solves these problems neatly. But just be aware of them before you buy!

Update, a month later: Do NOT buy this item if your exercise sessions last more than 2 hours! The longest I''ve ever got the battery to keep the unit functioning is 2 hours and 30 minutes. Then it just shuts off and you lose all your data. Sure, you can set it for "on demand" display, but a 2 hour battery life is ridiculous, especially when the manual says you can get 6 hours.

If your workouts are less than 2 hours, this will work fine for you; otherwise, try something else.

I am part of a running group and I have always used one of those traditional chest strap monitors. Over the weekend one of the guys in the group had this new device on his arm. At first I thought it was just some sort of mp3 player but I asked him what it is and he told me it was this new heart rate monitor that didn''t require a chest strap. I asked him if it works and he told me he loves it and that it works just as well as any other heart rate monitor out there. I asked him where he got it and he said online. I saw it on Amazon and decided to pick one up.

I must say after 2 weeks of using this thing I absolutely love it. The biggest plus is definitely not having to wear one of those chest straps. I always found myself adjusting my chest strap while running. This thing fits on your arm pretty comfortably and its easy to use. The color display is nice and the buttons are big and easy to read and push. It took me awhile to enter in all my information the first time but after that it was very easy to use. Just turn it on wait for the heart rate light to go on and off you go.

For the review that says it isn''t very accurate I disagree. Some variance is expected with any heart rate monitor out on the market now. My polar chest strap monitor constantly lost it''s signal and I had to adjust it to get it to pick up again. So yes this thing is not perfect but I definitely think its the best heart rate monitor out there on the market now. Overall I find it very accurate and easy to use. I highly recommend this product.

I purchased the ePulse and I also experienced significantly low battery life (only lasting 2-3 workouts). I found a solution and I hope it works for you: try the Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries. I switched and my battery power lasted about 10x as long. Good luck!

I have used heart monitors with chest straps in the past with very good results but never had a strapless one worth the money paid....this one is different though! The epulse 2 is easy to operate and gives excellent results! It seems as if the calorie counter is really accurate as well! I am very impressed.

The concept of a "strapless" heart rate monitor has a fairly mediocre image to overcome, causing speculation among potential buyers. After looking at the options to leave the strap for good, and reading reviews for alternative technologies, I was ready to replace my old Timex strap HRM with a new one of similar design. Then I found the ePulse2. Some good reviews, but didnt really see the hardcore scrutiny I would give. So I gambled and bought one from Amazon.

I took the maiden voyage today, had the strap around my forearm as instructed, along with having my Garmin Forerunner 205 (no HRM) and my old Timex ironman HRM watch and strap. Two watches and a chest strap, plus the forearm strap, I was wired for sound. Off I went for a 7 miler, varying my pace along the way. I had set all the personal info on the ePulse, got a signal and took off.

It was a mostly sunny spring day, so very bright at high noon. I had difficulty with reading the LED display, hard to read in the bright daylight on either setting for the display, normal or daylight -I tried both. I had to try to shadow the face of the display a bit to get a good look by putting my arm at weird angles, either with or without sunglasses on. I think I can find a way to work around this with just the right viewing angle, but this is hard to do while running along at cruising speed, so I will need to get more practice. Tree shade definitely helps. An LCD display would have been a much better design, esp. at this price point, hence 4 stars instead of 5.

I had the strap around my forearm near the elbow, and it stayed put (I thought it would slide down to the wrist, but did not even when sweaty). I was able to get the same performance from the sensor when the entire strap was around my wrist next to my watch. Presumably anywhere in between as well. I found the comfortable spot was near the wrist.

So, I was taking readings all along the way from both the Timex and the ePulse, while moving the strap and changing the display. Every minute or so, I was checking one then the other to compare. Once the HR was above 100 for both, they were within 5 beats of each other, usually within 2. Below 100, after coming to a stop or road crossing my HR dropped, and the Timex reading dropped much quicker. Timex would say 88 bpm and the ePulse said 105 or around there. Eventually they would converge in about 1 minute. Once back up above 100 again, they tracked closely all the way to 160. BTW, sitting in a chair they read identical output. I had always considered the strap type HRM to be closest to perfect readings, but I have seen my Timex throw out some strange numbers from time to time. Didn''t see any of that on the ePUlse.

The ePulse comes with a charger cord with USB plug, which then plugs into either a PC or a wall AC converter. I dont understand why they chose this design, since the USB serves no purpose other than to charge the battery. Could have done this with a standard AC cord. In other words, the USB does not allow communication between the device and the PC, like Garmin.

In summary, I was amazed at the ability of this sensor to track HR like the professional chest straps do. If you use the HRM as a training tool (see Don Fink, Mastering the Marathon), you will find a welcome addition to the lineup of choices, which now include a strapless option. Good job Impact Sports Techonologies, now make the ePulse3 in LCD format with 2-way communication to the PC to download data. You have a great technology to build upon, like Garmin.

Tall Man''s Black Pearl Bike Short 11 inch Inseam

Tall Man''s Black Pearl Bike Short 11 inch Inseam - Size X-LargeThese are the only shorts I could find yet that were long enough to fit me comfortably. I am 6''4" and a trim 185 most cyclewear seems to be made for people 6" shorter than me. These are long enough that the elastic leg grippers are not restricting muscles because they are halfway up your thigh. The fit of these is pretty large for a medium though. Must be half inch or more extra leg-hip circumference per leg compared to other brand mediums. Padding of the chamois is average for shorts in this price range. Decently comfortable on 30 mile ride. If you are over 6'' tall and looking for longer shorts these are worth a try.

Delfin Spa Bio Ceramic Anti Cellulite Capris

Delfin Spa Bio Ceramic Anti Cellulite CaprisThese are an absolutely great addition to an intense workout to help with mid-section water weight.

I wear about a size 6 and the medium worked well, fit well too. They come up high enough and go down low enough to get your mid-section and thighs sweating up a storm during an aerobic workout. Seriously drenched, rivulets of sweat.

Like a sauna in your pants. (As gross as that sounds, it''s really a good thing.)

One of my favorite things about the cut is that it isn''t that awkward height that isn''t quite high enough to help you avoid the potentially psychologically damaging muffin-top effect by stopping at your most squishshy mid-section point.

I also have purchased these: Everlast for Her All-in-One Body Slimmer but this item, the Delfin Spa Bio Ceramic Anti Cellulite Capris are thighs and bums above the Everlast pair and fit much better as well. The other brand buckles on the side and are an unsatisfying length on the legs.

There is only one issue; the smell.

No, I''m not talking about sweat, that''s not a conversation to have here or anywhere, that''s up to you and the people around you in a gym.

I''m talking about the eye-burningly head-turningly horrifically strong rubber pants stench.

You might think I''m kidding or exaggerating, but let me tell you a story about really how strong the odor is at first.

One day, you know the day, the day I was late getting out in the morning and waiting for my cleaning to come back and out of cute black leggings to wear under my tunic and under boots so I thought I''d just open these up and throw them on and then rush out to my bus stop.

So I''m power-walking to the bus stop and keep catching a scent that I can''t identify.

Since this is Los Angeles, home of no-ozone layer and smog of the stars, an irregular chemical smell isn''t too alarming.

But I started getting worried when I finally got to the bus stop and the smell was there, stronger than ever. I didn''t have time to go back home and change, but I slowly started to realize that the horrible smell was wafting up from my exercise pants that, fair enough, should not have been forced into leggings duty.

So I get on the bus hoping that it was one of those times when only I''m smelling a scent but it not being so obvious to everyone else.

Sadly, that just wasn''t the case.

At the next stop, a friendly older lady who lives a nomadic existence in our beach community got on the bus and paused at my seat as if to sit down, took a whiff of the air and took her assortment of bags and moved to a location several seats behind me.

Yes, the smell was so bad that a person without plumbing or shelter was offended by the strength of the stink.

Seriously. This seriously happened.

So by the time I get to the office I''m humiliated and avoiding humans like a grungy alley cat.

I sat in my office until my cleaning arrived and took these pants off quicker than you can say "stinkypants".

After washing them about 4 times (no kidding, 4) the rubbery smell is at an o.k. level.

Would buy again, would wash first several times.

As a note, the Everlast for Her All-in-One Body Slimmer smell just as bad if not actually worse.

It''s just the nature of the sauna pants beast I guess, so don''t let it put you off buying, just don''t wear them in public around people in enclosed places until they''ve been repeatedly laundered.

Or ever really, don''t wear stinky pants in public places that aren''t the gym. Let''s make that a rule that we follow like "no spitting" or something.

The Delfin Spa capris and shorts definitely do the trick: get your body to sweat --heavily --in the covered areas. They are also nice enough to wear to a dance class or gym, but thin enough to wear under sweats, too. The seller is fantastic. If you have any problems (I had some stitching issues), just let them know. They are super responsive and will get your problem take care of FAST!

I almost feel bad for hating these pants because so many people seem to love them! I personally hated them because they were noisy.Like NOISY.

People actually noticed that my pants were loud.

Its bad enough wearing pants to help slim down but to have them make a swish swish noise as Im walking or...moving? Horrible. I felt like they were announcing"Lady with fat legs entering the domicile, everyone stare as her pants serenade you!"

They do make my legs sweaty which I suppose helps with cellulite, but Im really just too embarassed to wear them in public. I sat in some gum the same day I tried them out so I couldnt return them as such,I do wear them , but only to go walking with my husband in the dead of night.

Because of the cringeworthy noise they make I havent worn them as often as I should so I cant really tell you if they will melt your cellulite.I can however tell you that these pants are darn loud.

The fit is nice, I got an xs( for your reference Im 5ft,110lbs) and they were snug but not tight, I have a short torso and they went over my belly button, the length hit about mid to lower calf . The noise bothered me so much that I could only give this product 2 stars, but if you dont mid noisy pants , or if your thighs dont rub together when you walk, then I would go ahead and buy these pants.I just think for the price, the pants should be not noisy right? I wanted to be able to wear these in a class exercise setting and these pants are definitly not the pants to do that in for me.

These pants have worked for me. I wear them for two hours to exercise two days a week. I noticed right away that the backs of my legs began to look smoother. I''m 74, so I don''t have the greatest expectations for this product, but I am very, very happy so far. I saw a similar product on Dr. Oz and thought these would do the same at half the price of the others. My sister bought the others, but she is not as dutiful as I. When she does wear the others, she notices a difference. Sandra Dee

Powerline PGM200X Glute Master

Powerline PGM200X Glute MasterThe Glute Master was not difficult to assemble (just pay attention to the instructions) and there were no missing parts. It''s not a commercial gym machine and it does not pretend to be; it''s a good basic piece of home gym equipment that does exactly what the manufacturer says it does.

It is important to properly adjust the chest pad height so that your back doesn''t bend backwards as you raise the foot plate. If you don''t do this it will give you a back ache, but when properly adjusted it''s fine.

The first few sets use it without any weights to get used to the movement... it''s not the way we normally move our legs and overdoing it means a trip to the massage therapist. After that start with fairly light weights (10 pounds or so) and add five pound increments as the reps start to become easy. In a SURPRISINGLY short period of time it will make an obvious difference in the shape of your butt and thighs if you actually use the thing every day or two.

Great piece of equipment.

Very smooth rolling action and spring assisted pin remind me of commercial equipment.

I can think of no other piece of equipment that lets you feel the isolation on the hamstrings.

We look forward to using it each day.

I bought the Powerline PGM200X Glute Master and got it with free shipping. I''ve had it about 7 months. It is junk. I''ve had to replace the rollers myself with parts from a local hardware store. Then, to my dismay, the two upper bars have started to split from the main support. This thing is not made well at all. Don''t waste your money. It is not worth it. There is NO place online to get support from Powerline (look for yourself). So, DON''T buy this piece of junk!

Bought this and I am very pleased with it NOW BUT I had to do a LOT of tinkering with the screws, bolts, etc. First off, the box was missing 4 bolts, now this could very well just be an isolated incident but still, had to go look for the right kind at the local home-improv store to be able to assemble it.

Additionally, the most annoying thing was that the nuts to put together the sliding mechanism are wrong too (which makes you wonder how quality-oriented the manufacturer of this thing is) When you get it, go to your local home-improv and buy 8 of the same diameter nuts that do NOT have one end blocked so the bolts can be tightened all the way (I know it sounds confusing but when you get this thing and try to assemble the gliding mech youll get why) this will enable you to tighten the gliding system properly making it glide as it SHOULD glide otherwise you will have a VERY hard time making this work.

In addition, the instructions for assembly are HORRIBLE.

So basically loved the machine but I really dont think its fair to leave the consumer to figure out and indeed to actually FIX the product''s shortcomings.

Amazon was contacted and they were very nice about it, telling me to send it back to exchange for another unit, BUT given the size of this machine it was just easier to keep it and find the missing bolts on my own as well as the right type of nuts. Hope this helps hard to find a butt exerciser (I know, I looked) and this one is fairly good after you "FIX" it.

Garmin Heart-Rate Monitor

Garmin Heart-Rate Monitor
  • Compatible With The Edge 305Hr And The Edgecad
  • Heart Beats Per Minute Wirelessly Transmitted to the Forerunner 50
  • Effectively Tracks and Records your Heart Rate While you Workout
  • Provides Instant Feedback about How Hard your Heart is Working
  • 0.35 Lbs (WxLxH) 2.5" x 3.0" x 2.74"

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)I have used this with my Garmin Forerunner 305, Forerunner 50, and Forerunner 405cx. Just wet it with saliva or water before you start, and it accurately and easily tracks your heart rate. The strap that attaches it to your chest is easily adjustable and easily removable. Unlike other products, my heart rate does not "jump around" 10 or 20 beats. The battery lasts a good amount of time and is easily replaceable. This is the best heart rate monitor that I have used, and I prefer it to Polar.

Works as advertised, no problems. This is a replacement of my first one that the seal (o-ring type) in the battery compartment failed, causing the battery to corrode due to moisture leaking. Then it never worked again. Be careful changing batteries not to damage the seal.

(Please note: the other user''s negative review for this item is not accurate. The photo pictured is accurate for the Premium HRM, Product Number 010-10997-02. See below for update to original review.)

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I tested out my friend''s Premium Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) on the trail this weekend and was extremely impressed and ordered mine yesterday. (My hat is off to Amazon this is a better deal than dealer''s pricing.)

The premium HRM is an excellent accessory to my Forerunner 405, which I initially purchased without a HRM, and the additional data set will be a big help to me when charting my progress and seeing gains over the same terrain over time, not to mention a decent "zone" training aid when road cycling.

A VERY IMPORTANT ITEM OF NOTE that people tend to forget/ignore when using these HRMs is that you need to wet the contacts for an accurate reading. You can use water, or simply rub some spit on in a pinch, but I would recommend swinging by a running store and getting a bottle of gel it''s cheap and it lasts forever, plus in my experience it provides the most accurate data... which is what we''re interested in with these toys, right? :)

Enjoy! I know I will happy trails.

----

UPDATE, Feb. 11th: Just a brief follow-on update from my original pre-review.

After three runs, this HRM functions beautifully. I have zero data spikes, my 405 picks up the signal immediately, and I haven''t even had to use my runner''s electrode gel for the contacts; just wet the contacts in the sink and strap it on and go. Simply put, it works PERFECTLY.

It''s also great having the training data to see which zone I''m training in or "Why did that run suck so hard?!"... oh, my hr was sky-rocketing and I was pushing too hard for event ''x''.

I would post an image here if I could so you could see the solid data and corresponding Garmin Connect screen capture.

Solid product, five stars.

I don''t know why Garmin won''t package this version with their watches, as the premium heart rate strap actually works. I found the stock strap to be finicky and inaccurate, even with gel. The premium strap works right off the bat without gel and doesn''t lose signal through-out the activity. It stays in place running, biking (on and off road), or hiking and is about as comfortable as they get. The snap closure in the front makes putting this on/off very easy. Overall I''d say this is as accurate as my polar strap, and a tad more comfortable. I always found polar to set the benchmark, but this takes it a little further in comparison and is a "no brainer" if you are having problems with the stock Garmin strap.

But now it''s completely unreliable, I mountain and road bike 4 times per week, doing intervals for which I really need the hearth rate monitor. But if it''s not tuned in from the beginning of my training it simply keeps it over 200bpm for hours or actually under 100bpm. I have tried creme, I soak it every time and sometimes it works fine but others NOT AT ALL... So I''m trying to find an alternative.

Pearl iZUMi Men''s Infinity Split Running Short

Pearl iZUMi Men''s Infinity Split Running Short,Shadow Grey,LargeThese shorts fit very well and the liner was very comfortable. The split legs give plenty of freedom of motion. This is important for running, but even more so to work out on certain cardio machines like FreeStriders, Steppers, and Incline Trainers that require substantial leg lifting.

Based on fit and overall quality, I would have liked to have awarded five stars, but I couldn''t, due to a deficiency in pockets. The one small zippered pocket is nice, and just big enough for keys with a modest fob. However, there is no pocket big enough to carry an identification card or credit card. I often run on a military base, and we''re required to carry ID cards at all times -these shorts won''t accomodate.

For the price of these shorts, there should definitely be more, and larger, pockets for not just keys, but ID and credit cards, and maybe some cash, too.

In sum: high quality free-striding comfy shorts, but way short on pockets.

PS I should mention that, although the product description indicates these have both a liner pocket and a zippered key pocket, the pair I received only had the one very small zippered key pocket. There was no liner pocket whatsoever.

Well, the inner waist band on these have to be the most comfortable I''ve ever had on running shorts. The length is good, and the split is okay. The problem is these don''t wick away moisture very well. Longer runs tend to leave them soaked, and then chaffing. Hopefully they''ll improve these... I like Pearl iZumi''s other products.

I was looking for a reasonably priced running short with a zipper pocket in back and these fit the bill. Being a cyclist I''m very familiar with and trust the Pearl Izumi brand. These shorts live up to the brand''s quality. The liner provides good support without being constrictive. The legs are loose enough to not chafe and the fabric wicks away sweat and lets it evaporate easily. Plus, that handy little pocket in back keeps my house or car key safely stowed away while I''m out on the trail.

CallaneticsEvolution DVD

CallaneticsEvolution DVDI purchased the original Callanetics VHS in high school and was thrilled to find this updated DVD with more Callanetics.

If you''re not familiar with the exercises, they''re slow like yoga, but very effective and with no inverted poses. The moves are isolated and you consentrate on a few areas at a time, but what you feel later (and believe me, you''ll feel it) is that you''ve worked your entire body. The cool thing is that it gets you a workout to your very core. It feels like you''re toning your muscles at a very deep level (I''m not a personal trainer, so don''t know proper terms) but you can tell it''s really working the muscles.

Some of the positions will feel awkward at first and takes a little time to adjust. Definately go with the woman demonstrating at your level (There are three to choose from). They give lots of instruction and reminders on how to position yourself, which is helpful.

This DVD is relaxing, while strengthening, and you will need some time to complete it all the way through. It is divided into sections if you want to concentrate on one section at a time.

While not as high tech and fancy as some of the exercise DVDs out, this one gets results that I''m happy with. I highly recommend this DVD.

This workout attempts to update Callanetics, but I''m not sure they succeed.

Is it a terrible workout? Not really. If you''re looking for a hybrid of yoga, callanetics and pilates, it''s not so bad.

If you love straight up Callanetics, stick with the older, Callan-led workouts. Callanetics at it''s core is very simple, and the older workouts tend to flow quite nicely, which really means that once you learn the moves, you should be able to work on your own without an instructor, book or dvd. It''s all about working at your own level, at your own pace, nothing scary. If you''re looking for Callanetics, I''d say to look at the original ''10 years younger in 10 days'' (an hour long), or the AM/PM (2 20 minute workouts, definitely doable as morning/evening workouts, it''s most of the 10/10 workout spread into two workouts).

In this ''Evolution'' workout, three exercisers work simultaneously, each doing a slightly different level.

There''s not much in the way of guidance, so in order to know what to do, you have to really look at the screen and try to puzzle out what''s going on. This is much easier for some moves than others. The transitions from one move to another don''t always make sense either, and you won''t know what''s coming up based on the instructor. More than once I''ve had to stop the dvd, figure out what position to get in, get myself there, and then restart the dvd. This kind of thing really ought not to be necessary.

There''s a section that purports to give tips on proper form, but it''s a discussion of theory and principles, not a step by step, here''s how you do moves x, y or z.

I do like some of the ideas for modifying the pulses, but again, the lack of proper cuing makes it impossible to figure out what to do unless you stop focusing on your workout and look at the screen.

Given that the original Callanetics workouts were all about getting in to the proper position before doing the pulses and maintaining proper form throughout, easing gently back out, the lack of advice and structure here seems kind of sloppy.

Some of the flow of the workout just seems odd, and in my view, if you want someone to do a particular yoga or pilates pose, use that name for it (cat, dog, downward dog, etc.) so people know what''s expected.

I''m assuming that some of this new ''Callanetics'' is all about marketing, continuing the business Callan Pinkney began, but honestly, I''d have preferred an old-school Callanetics routine.

I did callanetics when I was in my 20s. I came upon records and photos I had kept of my progress back then and was shocked at the results I had obtained in reducing saddle bags, toning thighs and lifting my derriere. Why, I asked myself did I stop? So, I was delighted when I found there was an updated callanetics and promptly bought it. It still works and it is even better than the original because the positions are much easier to hold. I saw results in a week. I have tried it all and frankly, I don''t like the gym scene, I hate lifting weights and I don''t like exercises like the "fire hydrant," which do little or nothing for saddle bags and are awkward. My legs tend to bulk up easily if I use machines, and I am sick of hearing trainers tell me it is all in my head. My jeans don''t lie. After doing this routine, I feel relaxed. There is no jumping around with throbbing music. It is ballet based. You work at your own pace and gradually build strength...elegantly. More than likely, your muscles will not be aching the next day. "No pain, no gain" is not in this equation. Lastly, the legs are balanced and take on feminine curves, not angular with some parts over developed, like when you work out on machines. If your life is already hectic and you are seeking a lovely experience to shape up, I highly recommend this. If you have neck or back issues, this should not be a problem except for the stomach section, which I skip. Lastly, you will lose inches, some people go down several dress sizes, however, this is not cardio, so you might on off days do something else.

I did Callanetics in my teens and although the goal then was to sculpt my butt into a bas-relief of a real dancer''s, I remember how great the program was. I recall the intense but simple exercises and how I would occasionally become frustrated that I never completely mastered them. They were subtle, but a challenge. So I was thrilled to see this updated version, CallaneticsEvolution. This DVD is a great way to reboot a flagging exercise program, and it is an ideal inauguration for those wanting to start a new one.

Instructor Sandra Hanna''s unobtrusive but confidently delivered tutorial maintains the gentle tone of the exercises (and her British accent provides an extra nudge of authority). Like the original VHS version, the movements remain gentle without being easy and the after-effects leave you feeling refreshed, never depleted or sore. But don''t let the mini-movements fool you... the pulsing actions, when performed correctly, add up!

Added bennie: The DVD''s relaxing background music puts my dog to sleep! This is great if, like mine, your dog sees floor exercises as an invitation to wrestle. (Try doing restorative yoga poses while an 80-pound maniac Labrador jumps on your abdomen. Enough said.)

I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone looking for gentle but effective exercises.

These are the things I appreciate about the Callanetics Evolution workout: This DVD has pleasant, non intrusive music that''s not too loud, creating a gentle, relaxed background to the narrator''s voice. The atmosphere the music creates allows you to do the exercises at your own pace, without feeling like you need to keep up with the demonstrators. Three women demonstrate 3 levels of each exercise, giving you something to work up to. After a few times of using the DVD, you can easily remember the exercises and incorporate them into your daily schedule. Some exercises are appropriate for stretching out your muscles or correcting your posture at the workplace or wherever you are. The movements are ballet/yoga/pilates based, and work deeply in your muscles.
