Precor Commercial Series Adaptive Motion Trainer with Open Stride TechnologyI have used this machine at my gym for the past several months and it is incredible. I wish I could afford to have one at my home. It is low impact and does just about everything...you can use it as a stair climber, a regular elliptical or because of it''s stride length you can use it as a treadmill and feel as though you''re running underwater! The arm handles are useful and provide quite a bit of resistance. You can also jog without the handles and really target your core. I have been a spin bike lover for years. However, I love this machine because I can blast 400 calories in 30 minutes! It is truly incredible. I''m so glad my gym has one.

I used to use this machine when I went to a different gym. God I love this machine. It''s so amazing. It really does do it all. You can use almost all legs, or you can use almost all arms. You can use it like a stair climber, you can use it as an eliptical, you can use it as one of those goofy things that just swings back and forth. I would never fork out 8 grand for it, but let me tell you its worth the money. This is an amazing machine right on the cutting edge of workout technology.

Steve Cotter - Extreme Strength - 12 Week Kettlebell ProgarmLet me say this right off the bat: Steve Cotter''s Extreme Strength is not--I repeat--is not for beginners. If you are absolutely new to kettlebell training, this is not the system for you to begin with. Mr. Cotter says as much in the introduction. You''d be better served with a milder instructional series to acclimate yourself to kettlebell training such as Steve Cotter''s Encyclopedia of Kettlebell Lifting series or even the Skogg program.

I say this not to ward off newbies entirely but, simply put, this DVD series is for those familiar with kettlebells who looking to take their conditioning to world-class levels ("not good shape but excellent shape").

However, I should add that, if you are new to kettlebells, Mr. Cotter has an entire section on the introductory DVD where he goes over the form of EVERY SINGLE EXERCISE ON THE PROGRAM. That''s over two dozen exercises. He demonstrates the form and discusses the finer points of each exercise (which he also does regularly on the workouts themselves) before you even begin the program. I cannot say this enough: Steve Cotter is a spectacular teacher in addition to being one of the best athletes on the planet.

So, if you do disregard my advice about familiarizing yourself with kettlebells, know that there is actual point-by-point instruction and demonstration of the exercises. Additionally, if you work according to your conditioning level, anyone can do this program. It will challenge kettlebell neophytes as well as more seasoned practitioners. Just remember to get the requisite clearance from your physician and start off with a fairly conservative weight. You''ll see that it won''t take much to leave you in a pool of your own sweat.

I''ve been training with kettlebells for about five years now and came into this thinking that I knew what hard training was (having worked up to 88lb kettlebells at 200 lbs in hard form lifting). I was quickly humbled. Pure strength will not take you far in this program. Anyone can be strong for brief periods but, to paraphrase Bruce Lee, only the truly strong endure over time. Be prepared to push yourself to your limits.

What Cotter emphasizes in this program is all-around conditioning: strength endurance, aerobic conditioning, anaerobic conditioning, work capacity, pure strength training, and flexibility. In short, real world fitness and athleticism. To this end, he will take you through progressively more challenging routines (18 in total) for six weeks culminating in what I like to call Hell on Earth, a short but unrelentingly brutal test of conditioning that will push you to the brink.

And then you repeat the process...but with more weight! This will push you beyond any plateaus into a new realm of fitness and you''ll reach rep counts that you never imagined possible (eg. 200+ snatches!).

Now, just to be clear, there is quite a bit of equipment suggested: several pairs of kettlebells of varying weights, a pullup/dip station, a dipping belt, a roman chair, an Olympic barbell set, and a power rack. You might ask why you would need anything beside kettlebells for a kettlebell training program. The answer is that, while kettlebells are magnificent tools and pound for pound the most effective training tools, they do have limitations. Maximal strength can be increased only so much as you progress. The heaviest kettlebells I''ve encountered are 100 lbs and squats with this sort of weight can be dangerous initially due to leverage and ineffective later on as your body adapts to the weight. With barbells, the sky is the limit and the power rack will ensure that you are protected as you venture into heavier weights. Additionally, the barbells will overload your muscles and help to make the toughest kettlebell cycles (series of repetitions) more manageable.

As for the remaining equipment, I made economical and space efficient choices where possible. In lieu of the pullup/dip station, I simply used an old doorframe pullup bar and a collapsible Ultimate Body Press Dip Stand sold on Amazon. Instead of purchasing a roman chair that would only be used solely for one exercise, I substituted hyperextensions with good mornings with my heavy kettlebells. Instead of a dipping belt, I used a weighted vest that I had lying around but dipping belts are hardly expensive.

Is it cheating? Far from it. In fact, Mr. Cotter encourages you to adapt and customize the program to what you have on hand and your current skill/conditioning level. He gives several kettlebell substitutes for the barbell lifts so a lack of barbells should not thwart you from purchasing this program. In fact, I did my first cycle without barbells and still found the workout to be exceedingly effective. (I used the three month program as an opportunity to save up for solid barbell set sold on Amazon for $269--$3 a day.)

My results:

Pullups (Day 1: 12 / Day 90: 20)

Dips (Day 1: 10 / Day 90: 21)

Resting Heart Rate (Day 1: 72 / Day 90: 64)

Women Staring at My Butt (Day 1: 0 / Day 90: several)

I sincerely wish I had this program while I was in the police academy. I would''ve have finished in the top of my class!

To wrap up, here are the pros and cons.

Pros:

-Customization: Can be used by anyone--from relative newbies (once they understand kettlebell fundamentals)to more seasoned practitioners

-Most workouts clock in at 35 minutes or less--they''ll just seem endless while you''re doing them

-Will result in a leaner, more muscular body that performs as well as it looks

-Pushes you to the brink and tests your mental toughness

Cons:

-While this may be a vain quibble, there is not much focus on chest or abdominal development per se. That is, there is not a focus on the aesthetics of these regions; performance is the name of the game. I do wish that he had indulged in building up the vanity muscles but I''m appreciative of the focus and relatively short sessions.

In conclusion, if you would like to attain the kind of professional level of all around conditioning that you never thought possible, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to pick up this program. It pays for itself with the increased energy levels, lean and muscular physique, and confidence that comes from knowing that you are in supreme condition.

If I could give this a 4.5 star rating, I would!

This is a great strength and endurance workout system. Steve Cotter is an excellent instructor and was easy to follow. Cotter performs all the lifts in a tutorial, supplies a warmup and cooldown. Unlike some instructors, he performs all the lifts along with you while you work out. He goes a long way in supplying you with everything you need in this system except the equipment for the different lifts. Over the last 5 years I have completed P90X, P90X+, and Rushfit several times. I also have used Shadow-Jitsu and Combat Kettlebells (My Mad Methods). These are all quality workouts supplying excellent systems that merit the dedicated in different ways. None of the previously mentioned systems pushed me to the brink the way this 12 week kettlebell system did. This program is designed to push the user beyond what they thought their abilities were and what they thought their bodies would bear. The end result is explosive power and endurance for perseverance.

I agree that this system lacks a targeted chest and abdominal workout, but there are many workouts that can supplement, since this is a 3 day system. This is the only thing this system lacks.

One word of warning: this workout is not for beginners, it is a very advanced system. I reccomend Kettleguards or sweatbands for the wrists, chalk for the hands, and in the case of high rep count, weightlifting gloves. The hands take a beating, and in the beginning, so do the wrists.

I purchased the GSI watch as a backup that I wouldn''t mind abusing. Plus, the continuous altimeter monitor seemed useful like the Suuntos.

Honestly, I cannot recommend this product to anyone as an outdoor sport watch for several reasons:

1. The altimeter is unbelievably inaccurate. It shifted up and down by 40 feet even when I was standing still. And this was after calibration at sea level. Seriously, this is a joke. I calibrated the altimeter several times, but to no avail.

2. The faux carbon fiber trim looks so cheap, it''s embarrassing. I''ve seen miniature cars with better faux carbon fiber.

3. The barometer is equally erratic. Since it uses the same sensor, I am not surprised.

4. The pedometer is off by 10-15%.

5. The strap is stiff and hard, not comfortable at all for long-term use.

6. The watch just looks plastic all around.

Overall, I''d say avoid this. It''s not even a decent lookalike watch.

I just returned it to Amazon. Gotta love Prime''s return policy.

The watch requires you immediately to select between Metric and Imperial; the query is waiting for you as you pull the watch out of the box and before you get the instructions. If you bump the wrong button, the selection remains metric. There are no instructions to reset to Imperial and no apparent website instructions. Removing and replacing the battery was a no-go; the watch housing is too fragile and the watch wouldn''t restart. Avoid.

First of all, let me just say this thing is SUPER uncomfortable! If it was loose it swung around too much and if it was tightened it was really restricting. I also tested this on a treadmill going a constant speed and it was off by .2/.3 which was too much in my book. As a result, it also didn''t track the mileage accurately either (as compared to the treadmill). I trust the treadmills at the YMCA more than the watch because it''s a piece of equipment that costs thousands to be accurate. Returning this to try my luck at (hopefully) a better pedometer.

I love this watch! It''s does everything! Besides telling the time, its a chronograph (stop watch & lap timer), Altimeter (which is great cause I hike and climb in the mountains), barometer (cool for weather forecasting of pressure), pedometer section gives you a timer, distance, average speed, max speed, odometer, steps, and calories burned. Simple to set up, and measure my stride, and then away I go! It is perfect! Love, it, love it, love it! Too bad they dont have one that looks a bit more feminine... No worries! Still love it! :)

I had been searching for a swim training machine for quite some time. I had considered the Vasa Trainer, the Vasa Ergometer, and the Halo Swim Trainer bench, all too expensive for me. What I really needed was a folding weight training bench and the StrechCordz system. I ordered the PowerBlock Travel Bench and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and sturdiness of this little folding bench. I use it both for swim training exercises with strechcordz ( those rubber stretch cords ), and as a simple horizontal weight bench with dumb bells. This is the perfect, and also the most affordable system that I could put together for my specific needs. I am a surfer, but I can''t get to the beach often enough to keep my paddling muscles in tone. This folding weight bench with rubber stretch cords, and some light dumb bell work are just what I need.

I should mention that I was happy that my PowerBlock Travel Bench turned out to be the new version with the rounded ends (emulating my short board somewhat).

The Vasa Ergometer and Vasa Trainer are way too expensive for me, and take up too much storage space.

The Halo Swim Trainer, at $400, is closer to being affordable but the bench does not look sturdy enough to use with dumb bells.

I made the best choice in terms of storage space and the quality of construction is outstanding.

I like this i have a small space and i can put this behind my door folded up and take it out when i am ready to use it with ease. its light and easy to carry because of the handle it has. It does not come with a strap, but it does have the metal handle that is shown on the picture. As i said in the title it is sturdy and you can do incline bench press. I cannot do decline bench press because there is no seat to stabalize me from sliding, but i still love this bench. I''m 184lbs and lift 140 and it holds me very well, no wobbling.....gl2u!!!

He does not slow down like the other older TaeBo series, the ones that are on VHS, but you are moving and moving and for someone that is in there 40''s the excersises still kick my but just like they did years ago especially the TaeBo Advanced workout did. Life Fitness T7-0 Treadmill

Life Fitness T7-0 TreadmillI bought this treadmill in December 2007 and I have had nothing but problems with the "activity zone" (the small box with the controls for incline and speed located right above your waistline) for the past year. The activity zone touch pad does not respond when I try to adjust the speed or incline. I''ll be right in the middle of my run and the activity zone just freezes on me. I won''t be able to adjust the incline or speed and I''m forced to finish my run with whatever incline or speed I originally set. On countless occassions, I have tried restarting the treadmill in an attempt to reactivate the activity zone touch pad but it doesn''t work. There are times I can''t even workout at all because the speed button on the activity zone doesn''t respond at all even upon start-up. There is no other way to adjust the speed on the treadmill other than by the activity zone touch pad which is a horrible design flaw. I have called LifeFitness customer service department several times informing them of the continous problems I am having with the activity zone. They have sent me 2 different activity zone replacements but the replacements have not fixed the problem. I had a treadmill technician come out and he confirmed the problems that I was having. The technician also said that the "new" activity zone replacement that LifeFitness sent me had "bad" wires in it. So, we had to request yet another activity zone replacement along with some new wires that connect the activity zone to the main console. The last repair cost me about $200 in labor(not under warranty) and lasted for a couple of months and now I''m back to having an unresponsive activity zone. I called customer service AGAIN and they refused to cover any labor costs associated with the ongoing problem. They agreed to send me yet ANOTHER activity zone replacement but refuse to acknowledge that the treadmill has a serious problem with the activity zone. I''m so dissappointed in this very expensive treadmill. I thought I had to spend more money to get commercial grade quality but what I got was a "lemon" and a company that doesn''t stand by its products or its customers. I just hope another consumer doesn''t make the same mistake I did.

This isn''t a commercially rated treadmill, but it is very high end. I''ve trained for three marathons on this machine; anywhere from 15 to 60 miles per week. My wife and I have put hundreds of miles on this machine and it still runs like new.

The electronics are cool, if you''re just interested in some fitness running programs. You can program this machine for speed and incline and time. Basically, you can record a routine and save it. Also, it has several built in routines that are pretty interesting; interval, climbing, fat loss, 5K, 10K, outdoor running simulation.

The rollers are commercial size, making the overall mechanics of the machine very durable.

My only complaint is that the heart monitor that comes with it is one of those types where you can''t replace the battery. I bought a third party compatible one that takes a CR3230. It works fine.

It''s whisper quiet, and stays that way if you keep it clean.

I bought this instead of a landis 7. I''m regretting the decision. The console is the biggest problem with the unit. I cannot get the heart rate hill workout to work. I enter a target heart rate and the lower heart rate target is always zero. I''ve tried calling the dealer, life fitness and it''s been a waste of time. The after sales support is poor.

The treadmill aspect seems ok, it works, it''s a little noisy but I''m happy with it. The console software is poor. Editing user profiles is hard as they don''t even have a cursor showing which letter you are editing. They flash the current letter, what''s a flashing space look like? Yep, a space. Not useful. With no logging or a way to export runs, I end up using my garmin 305 to script runs and record them. The custom workouts are very poor, 20 segments all equal length, who does that? Most intervals consist of a segment and a rest period and you repeat those steps. That''s very hard to do on this unit.

It has a marathon mode that allows workouts longer than 99 minutes but unfortunately, it seems none of the workouts support it. For example, if you are doing a Random workout then all is well for the first 99 minutes but once it trips over to the second 99 then the random stops working and the slope stays fixed at 0. You can still change the level but it has no effect. I was expecting that a longer workout would mean the workout type would continue to function. This severely limits the usefulness of marathon mode as basically you''d need to stop the program and restart it anyway so whats the point?

The console uses touch sensitive buttons. You can''t place an iPad of iPhone on the ledge on the console because it will keep pressing the touch sensitive buttons. This is really annoying. You''d need a tv stand or something. Push buttons wouldn''t have this problem.

The activity buttons are useful. I set them to the speeds or grades I want to use with my garmin 305 scripted workout and then manually change the mill when my watch beeps. It''s ridiculous that the console cannot script this kind of thing automatically. But, there it is.

Distance accuracy wise, it seems very accurate right now. I used a measuring wheel to count of 1 mile and with 1.0 miles on the treadmill, I measured 0.997 miles on the wheel. Close enough. But, I don''t see any way to calibrate it once the belt stretches a little. Again, on a high end mill like this, I''d expect such a calibration feature.

I had it for 3 months now and given the poor after sales service from both the dealer and the company, I''m regretting my decision to buy it but the console on the landis isn''t much better from reading the manual. The mechanicals seems very good but the console is very disappointing. If you''re a serious runner then you''ll be let down by the console. Maybe their customer base is people who just want an expensive treadmill and use it a couple of times a month but if you use it for serious running then if you can find something with a similar quality deck and a better console then you''ll be happier. The sad part is, who hard would it be to fix the console, I mean seriously!

I run about 30 miles a week.

Update:

It''s been two years now and the speed buttons don''t work sometimes on the activity console. I had them replaced last year but they failed again. So, this looks like a design issue. I''ve run maybe 1100 miles on it this year and done my first ultra. I like the unit, mechanicals are durable but the console programs are more or less useless to me and the speed adjust buttons on the activity console are very annoying. I''ll get them replaced again this year

Shortly after our new LifeFitness T7 treadmill was installed, it shut down in the middle of a session. The local service rep was very helpful, and replaced the circuit board which controls the machine. We also soon noticed rust corroding the rollers, and were surprised at the lack of engineering thought and choice of material for parts which could be expected to have to stand up to sweat and salt. After several years, the machine quit again without warning. Material : rather soft n comfy after all the duration of the weighted dip exercise will only last no more than a minute. While one reader comments that the length of the chain is not longer enough if 3 or 4 45 lbs or 25 kg plates are chained up. But again a nylon belt is not meant for heavy dipping as the sides of the belt are not sturdy enough n will fold up and that will not be comfortable. Pay more and get a leather dip belt instead.

There wasn''t any previous reviews for this belt when I bought it. Overall, it''s what I expected from the photo. Good for the price and fits my waist well. The chain, clasp, and material are of good quality and I prefer this over a leather dip belt because I was afraid of the wear and tear. At least with heavy material like this, I can replace it myself later if it wears out. I''ve read other places of leather belts ripping under the weight of the added plates and jumping down from doing pull ups or dips.

My only compliant with this product is the obvious lack of length for the chain. I know I can go to the hardware store and pick up some additional length but that''s just an additional hassle. It would be difficult to load 45 lb plates on this chain however it works well with 25 lb plates. I can load up to 3 or 4 25 lb plates (100 lbs)and I think that would be suitable for most gym rats. As another reviewer observed, the chain on this belt is short. It''s not obvious from the pictures or the reviews just how short it is.

The chain is too short to first load the belt, then put the belt on. Putting the belt on first and then loading lots of small plates is awkward. The plates are too small to rest on the ground (the short chain strikes again) so you kind of have to juggle them while you load them. Aggravating. Also, put a 25lb plate on and it might hit your groin.

There are U-shaped connectors that attach the chain to the belt on one side and the chain to a clip on the other side. The U-shaped connector is of such a size and shape that it and the clip get locked together at a weird angle and it takes a bit of wrestling to unfreeze them.

The quality of the rest of the belt is great though. If they would fix the chain length and the design of the U-shaped connectors, this belt could be a winner. As is, I would stay away unless you want to hack the chain yourself.

This is an excellent dip belt. Sturdy, comfortable, and durable. I have never had any issues lifting large amounts of weight with this belt. The back pad stays very centered and keeps you stable. Roughly the thickness of two average mats together, this one will help cushion all those boney parts and not bunch up the way two mats together always seem to do. It''s not only thicker, it''s denser to boot. It''s cushion without mushiness. However, this cushion comes at the price of being quite heavy -more heavy than four average mats combined! Probably not the best choice for a mat you tote around unless you want to get in some extra strength training. This one is the kind you buy, find a place for, and leave it there. Also note that the roll this yoga mat makes is huge, something to consider if between practice storage space is an issue. The "thick" mats at 3/16" will still provide extra cushion without the hassle but if you''ve tried them and they''re still not enough, this might be the way to go. Mats that are about one third as thick as this one (1/16") are good for travel or placing under a thicker mat to provide more traction. The average mats are about 1/8." This mat is also two inches wider than the average mat, 24" is the standard width, and three inches longer than average -68" is the standard length.

There are two sides to this and nearly all yoga mats. Look carefully at the ''bumps'' on each side of the mat. On most mats, the larger bumps are designed to face upwards to cushion your hands, feet, and knees during poses while keeping your body from dangerously slipping out of alignment. The smaller bumps are designed to face downwards to grip the floor and keep the yoga mat from sliding. With this mat it''s slightly different. Manduka''s mats have a unique dotted bottom surface that holds the mat in place during your practice. It looks unlike any other mat you''ve ever seen. This mat also has a brand label on one end. Just like on most but not all mats with a label, it is located on the ''up'' side.

You will need to wash this mat once before using it the first time to remove the coating. Instructions for this are included with the mat. This yoga mat will increase in stickiness with use. (So do most mats.) They start out mildly sticky and increase in stickiness the more they are used. If you find yours decreasing in stickiness each time you pull it out, this is the typical sign that a light coating of dust or too much body sweat has accumulated on your mat and it needs a light hand washing with very diluted soap and water. After washing, dry your mat unrolled, inside, and away from sunlight. (Hanging over the shower bar works nicely.)

When you first unroll your mat you will find one end to be a bit curled. Simply alternate the direction you roll your mat (top outside once, then bottom outside next) or the end you start from (curled end once, flat end next time) and you''ll find it straightening out more or less over time.

I recommend buying your own yoga mat even if your yoga studio or gym provides them for you. I''ve worked in many studios and gyms over the years. Sometimes management has mats cleaned often, sometimes not. If you bring your own mat you always know where it''s been. :o) Plus, owning your own mat may encourage you to begin valuable practice at home.

For my students who have trouble with their knees in some of the poses requiring the body weight to rest on a knee, I recommend temporarily folding over one end of the mat to get double cushion under the knee while still leaving one layer under the rest of the body. This saves you having to haul more than one mat out each time you practice which can be discouraging especially to the beginner.

First off, I''ve been practicing ashtanga/power yoga for about a year and a half now. I''m not an expert, but I know what works for me. My hands and feet sweat a lot during class. Most mats I''ve tried turn into a slip-and-slide after the first 5 minutes. From day one I''ve had to use a towel under my hands at the front of the mat to keep from collapsing in down dog. I''ve tried them all, your standard "sticky" mat, a mysore rug, etc. The sticky mat gripped until I got sweaty then it was worthless. I purchased the Manduka black pro mat a couple months ago and have practiced/taught at least 100+ hours (primarily vinyasa flow) with the mat. KB Scorcher Series DVDs are a great & quick workout! They are shorter than Dasha''s live workouts but still pack a punch. I burn anywhere from 500-600 calories per workout! After each workout I''m drenched in sweat, but feeling energized.

The Series includes 4 different workouts which you can combine 2 at a time to get a mega workout or one at a time so you can spread them across the week. My favorite combination is the Power DVD (by far the most challenging of the 4 because of some serious high impact plyometric sets) followed by the Diversity for some core centralized mat work.

The workouts are done in sets, and each move is repeated for 1 minute. The moves target your whole body. Nothing gets a break! Dasha breaks down the moves so they are easy to pick up. There''s also a bonus clip in each DVD that breaks down basic moves in further detail, helpful for all those who are new to training with kettlebells.

Even though I think the DVDs are stellar, I have two cons: One is the lack of motivating music the other is that Dasha is talking non stop throughout the sets which is NOT something she does in her live classes. I''m so glad that I found the Kettlebell Kickboxing Scorcher Series because it absolutely works! I''ve been using the DVDs for a month now, and I am experiencing great results. When I turned 50 a year ago, I started working out 5-6 times a week. I''ve mostly used Jillian Michaels DVDs, but others as well. Though I still love those workouts (and lost about 20 pounds in the process of using them), I am seeing more physical changes with this Kettlebell Kickboxing series than any of the other workouts that I''ve done. I still use the others as an "extra" day sometimes, but I don''t feel guilty about my rest days thanks to Dasha''s guidelines.

Kettlebell Kickboxing is an interval style workout using kettlebells, or a dumbbell. Most of the moves are pretty straightforward, and the addition of weight makes them more intense. Overall, I really like these workouts, they are shorter, the longest one is 45min with warmup/cooldown, but you work hard during this time. I don''t have a dread factor with these, and they go by really quickly. I think Dasha does a good job sequencing the moves, so the higher impact moves are spread throughout the workout. Dasha also encourages you to work at your own pace, and provides lower and higher intensity modifiers in the workout. I will say if you are new to burpees/sprawls, you may want to look at something with less sprawl/burpees/planks, or plan on using a step or some kind of bench to put your hands on. I do wish she would have included a brief tutorial on some of the more unique moves, but I did get it down after doing it once.

I''m in love with this workout series! I''m a pretty avid home fitness user, and have relied on Jillian Michaels videos (I own them all) to help meet my fitness goals. I lost over a 100 pounds working out with them and eating right in about a year, and I''m finally at my goal weight. However, if you know Jillian videos you know that a lot of moves are repeat moves, and I really needed something new and exciting...specifically to achieve some final definition and tone.

I love kettlebells and came across this DVD on amazon. On the first day of using it, I stacked two of Dasha''s dvds for an hour long workout. I hate to continue comparing to Jillian, but I''ve never been compelled to go for a second round of her workouts after doing one. This was different though. I was pouring sweat, the moves were innovative & fun, and clearly isolated my remaining problem areas (such as that tiny pooch in the lower abdomen, hips, and butt). I am HOOKED. The great thing about kettlebells is the ability to combine cardio and strength into one workout, so you''re really getting a 2 for 1. No need to add in substitute cardio after doing this, which is great because I simply dread running in the winter.

The reviews are correct in saying that Dasha talks and talks and talks and....talks. There is *rarely* a silent moment. This doesn''t detract from the quality of the workout though. You have a mute button for a reason. I mute the DVD and play my own music in the background, so this is really a non-factor in my opinion.

I''m very happy with this purchase, for the mere fact that it''s almost plateau-proof. There are four DVDS that you can rotate as you wish to increase muscle confusion. On top of that, you can increase the weight of your kettlebell as you progress. I started the warm up with a 10 lb bell and it was way too light. I quickly switched to my 15 and will continue to use that for 3-4 weeks until increasing. I''ll definitely update this review in a month or so with my progress. =)

*UPDATE* 3/10/13 -I''m down 14 pounds! I do cardio 2-3 days a week, (usually the stepmill/stairmaster) at the gym, and do one of these dvds the other 3 days of the week. I''ve also noticed a VAST improvement in my cellulite. Last summer I was thin but still had horrible cellulite on the back of my thighs. It looks so much better after two months of this dvd and clean eating. I''ll definitely be buying short shorts this summer and I couldn''t be happier!

After reading some comments, I was expecting a serious learning curve. I''d braced myself & was prepared for confusion & frustration. I''m that 40yo guy who returned his first Android phone because there was too much to configure. I''m hardly some techie.

If you purchase a device like this for all it does, don''t expect to grasp ''all it does'' in the first ten minutes. Perhaps that''s why some get frustrated. Then they come to Amazon to vent and punish Garmin because they thought operating a Range Rover would be the same as operating a tricycle. If you don''t want to have to learn anything, then purchase a device that doesn''t do as much for you to have to learn. Timex offers a basic heart rate watch for under $50. You''ll be up and running in seconds.

I won''t go over everything the GF410 does, but I''ll share my experience from set-up to upload. If you''re thinking about Polar & Suunto, keep reading.

SET-UP

The 410 is a very features-packed, high-quality, stylized device that is mostly easy to use. The touch bezel *is* different, but it''s easy to make sense of when you understand the simple idea. In less than one hour, I was able to flow. The watch even guides you through a brief operational tutorial before you can use it. Garmin has done all they can to make it easy to understand something forward and different whilst still functional. However, it''s just not too practical. As you circle the watch, your finger blocks the options that come up.

Sign up on Garmin Connect, enter your info & Garmin computes your heart rate zones. (It helps if you already know your resting rate. There is an Android app for that) Within a few minutes, I was able to build a heart-rate-based work-out interval from warm-up to V02max. (You can look up heart rate interval training on YouTube if the idea is new to you.) You can also set up speed and distance intervals. The site holds your hand. However, most folks probably won''t know what to do with the specific heart rate info feedback. The graphs require a professional or special training to do anything with.

If you''re unfamiliar with interval training (for speed, distance or heart rate), go to YouTube & look up "Polar Sport Zones".

I ran into a bump whilst installing ANT. Apparently, some computers need an additional Windows file to run the program. In case ANT won''t download, the file you might need is vcredist_x86. It doesn''t make anything run in the background or install a start-up. It''s just some component which allows for ANT technology, apparently. Everything else, smooth sailing. Without any prodding, ANT will transfer any new data between watch & computer within seconds.

As for the hardware, it''s a much higher quality product than anything from Polar or Suunto. Even the design & detail of the wrist strap is impressive. Garmin throws in 2 extra cloth straps and the tools to install them. The box includes two additional charger plug-ins for foreign electrical outlets. The chest strap is soft material. The entire package feels really high-end, polished & complete.

ON THE ROAD

Everything worked as planned. Having used the 305 before, I was impressed with how quickly the 410 acquires satellites, even whilst indoors, downstairs. The 410 took me through my custom work out w/o a hitch. I came home and, by the time I''d hydrated & cleaned-up, everything was uploaded and graphed online. No peripherals, no cables, nothing to turn on or click. BAD ASS!

I do have a couple of minor gripes. Unlike the 310xt, the 410 doesn''t offer vibrating feedback. You can set alarms to remind you to hydrate or eat during a long run, but those alarms are only audible. So, if you''re listening to music, you won''t hear them. Nothing major, but would be nice to have.

I usually program my run on the website. Programming on the watch itself simply makes no sense to me.

I found the battery life to be rather good. I''d logged 6 hours of runs, w/the light on for 2, and was left with a 76% charge. I don''t need to charge it every night, as some say. Fortunately, the unit can be turned completely off when not in use. This makes all the difference. I''d rather have a battery I can recharge once or twice a week whilst sleeping, than to have to ship it off for new batteries every year.

COMPARISON: POLAR

Polars are known for their detailed heart rate feedback programs. The 410 collects much of the same information and ''Connect'' displays plenty of feedback as well. You can always plug your information into other sites for even more detail. Polars use foot pods to track distance & pace instead of GPS. The pod is large & must be calibrated for each pair of shoes. That''s a pain. It does, however, offer cadence feedback, but Garmin offers a smaller foot pod that does so as well. Of course, some Polars offer GPS add-ons. The closest competition to the 410, however, is the RS800x. It doesn''t offer GPS add-on. Some Polars require a $44 FlowLink device to transfer workouts. A bit of a rip-off when ANT, USB cable, WiFi & bluetooth are free. Polar''s RS800x, like the RS300x SD, feels substantially cheaper than the 410. On both Polars, the screens are very dim, offer no contrast or contrast settings, the backlights are a joke and the buttons are cheap. Polars just feel really dated and chintzy. Polar has poor customer service as well. I''m ''speaking'' from personal experience.

COMPARISON: SUUNTO

I''ve never owned a Suunto, but they seem to be more geared for those traversing mountains with their altimeters and barometric pressure gauges. If you''re a serious runner who takes on trails & pavement, you''d probably be better suited to a Garmin or Polar. If you''re on a budget, the Polar RS300x SD is your guy. If you scale Annapurna or Mt. Kilimanjaro, then go with Suunto.

CONCLUSION

For those who appreciate what Garmin''s Forerunner 410 has to offer but find themselves confused, spend some time with it. Look up YouTube vids, join the forum if need be. You''ll be up & running in no time.

If you''re new to these devices or this sort of training, dcrainmaker offers detailed information about training and watches. He''ll always answer questions & he loves what he does.

If you''ve been running for a while and seem to have stagnated, the 410 will make running fun again, offering new challenges for speed and heart rate. I''m prone to buyer''s remorse, but I''m quite happy with my purchase. The screen is a bit small. The touch bezel isn''t very practical and programming a run on the device makes zero sense, but it does a lot, works well and attention to detail goes a long way w/ me. The Garmin 410 bevel creates all kinds of issues and when it rains it does not respond well and can change by itself. Also in winter running you have to remove your gloves to change pace of Virtual partner where the 310Xt you don''t because you simply press buttons. I also don''t like the fact the batter life of the 410 is only 8 hours where the 310XT is 20 hours. I also find the 410 does not connect as fast as the 310XT and is not as accurate as the 310.

Feature-wise this is an excellent watch. However, as other reviewers have pointed out, some of the units suffer from catastrophic issues with software reboots and the battery meter. As a result, I would strongly discourage readers from buying this watch. I observed the first symptoms about a month after buying the watch. It would reboot unexpectedly. About three months later the reboots were immediately followed by false battery meter reading. The meter indicated 0% charge even though the watch was really close to 100% charge. The watch would then stay on for days, but during workouts frequent and annoying low-battery warnings were displayed as the system erroneously measures the battery at 0%.

The latest firmware upgrade does not fix the issue. I called Garmin support. They are certainly aware of the issue as they already documented procedures to recommend to users to alliviate the problem. Multiple users, including me, have reported on forums that these procedures do not work. Garmin did not acknowledge this was a software problem and explicitly stated that they have no open bugs related to the issue. They said this only happens to a very small fraction of the units sold. The only conclusion is that this may be a hardware issue and readers are better off not running the risk of buying a busted unit.

When I first purchased my Forerunner 410 in November 2010, I thought it was the best thing ever. For the first three to four months, I was thrilled with it. Unfortunately, as my marathon training progressed I started to notice the watch doing some odd things. At first it would occasionally reboot for no apparent reason. Over the following weeks, the problem got worse and worse. As it did, the battery life also started becoming unstable. Sometimes the 410 would work OK, but the best case battery life dropped to 4-5 hours instead of the 8 I got out of it during those first months. In the worst cases, I would take the watch off the charger in the morning, shut it down until my run, and had a dead battery before I had gone one mile. The display that shows the battery life remaining is pretty much worthless now. And, it still suffers from reboots for no obvious reason often at inopportune times, like during my marathon.

If you only do short to medium runs length runs, or are very fast, then the fact that the battery life seems to have problems might be acceptable for your situation. If you''re planning on doing runs of several hours, won''t be able to recharge it before every run, or won''t find reboots during runs/races acceptable, then you might want to look for something other than the 410. When it works right, it really is a great tool for training. But, if you need a device you can count on, you might want to wait and see how the reviews look on the new Forerunner 610 or consider going with one of the older, cheaper, and more proven devices like the 305.

If you''re still on the fence about purchasing a Forerunner 410 (or 405/405cx for that matter), I''d suggest you visit the Garmin forums (forums .garmin .com) and take a look at the posts by various owners who are having similar hardware/software related problems so you can make an informed decision.

Edited 5/1/11 At this point my Forerunner 410 has become totally unreliable. I had taken it to Nashville to use during the Country Music Marathon yesterday. It had been fully charged and shutdown before I left. When I turned it on an hour or so before the race, it immediately said "low battery" and shut itself down. I charged it again when I got home. This morning it read 100% charged and I shut it down. This afternoon when I tried it use it, it again said "low battery" and shut itself down. I''ve again contacted Garmin about the problem. Maybe they''ll replace it this time instead of just suggesting things like firmware updates and charge/discharge cycling.

I have this item for two weeks now and so far I can say I''m pleased with some watch outs. The watch is small and lightweight (considering it has a GPS) and the basic functions work perfectly. Most positive features are:

1. Fast GPS pairing

2. Once you setup, the information is easy to read

3. Simple upload to the Training Center software

On the other side, I have many reservations with the touch bezel... I imagined that a GPS watch should be made for people that is used it for advanced training (multi-sport and/or off road training). I did not notice that the watch is not intended for swimming, for instance (yes, it''s not water-proof). And, although the bezel sensitivity has increased substantially versus the 405 model, sometimes it''s a pain to use it with bike full-finger gloves. Since I also do lots of trail-running and adventure racing, I also acquired the foot pod and the bike sensor (to guarantee longer battery life and to avoid losing GPS signal in a dense part of the trail). So far both are working just fine.

I also believe there is too much complexity on the setup process (training pages, shut down operation, accessories calibration, etc). I still could not find a place that summarizes how much time I spent in each Heart Rate zone in a given workout (my training is mainly based on this).

The bottom line: very good equipment with lots of easy to ready information: pace, distance, HR, elevation, speed and all the details for a better training plan. It has some opportunities in terms of complexity and interface. I still think it''s one of the best GPS enabled HR monitor in the market.

UPDATE: After a couple of weeks I will give it an extra star (from previous 3 stars). The reasons are:

1. I manage to manipulate the bezel with full-finger gloves. It takes some time but now I was able to do it.

2. I finally managed to find all the information I need in the Training Center (specifically how much time I spent in each HR zone). It''s under the ''Totals'' tab.

The lack of the 5th star is for the complex setup process and for not being waterproof.

The provided ball is 65cm and should be used by anyone 5''5" 5''11"...if you don''t fit in this height range, you''ll need to buy a smaller or bigger ball. The provided resistance band is ridiculously short and cannot be adjusted to be longer so most of the exercises demonstrated in the DVD cannot be performed using this resistance band unless you''re incredibly strong (hulk-like) or incredibly short (midget like). I had to go out and buy a resistance band for a beginner/medium level.

The DVD is very difficult to follow. If you''ve never used a stability ball before, this DVD will move at a very fast pace for you. By the time I figured out how my body was supposed to be positioned, the DVD was already on to the next exercise. The DVD is is divided into warm-up/level one/level two/cool down segments. Level one for some reason is a lot more difficult than level two. It includes exercises that combine the ball and the band. Level two is very short and uses just the ankle band.

Overall, the DVD was too short, not organized, moved too quickly, did not break moves down into simple segments first, contained moves too difficult for most beginners and required materials not included in the kit.

You''d be much better off buying a stability ball,a set of resistance bands, and a Pilates DVD (with good reviews) separately.

Pros: Very pleasant customer service people. I called about missing parts in my kit (pump and tape measure) and I was able to talk to someone immediately and they were very nice.

I bought this item from Natural Fitness directly, and not from Amazon. When it arrived, the box was completely damaged and not placed in a separate shipping box, but shipped in the actual product box. Overlooking the box damage, inside the product looked almost as if it had been purchased and returned. Almost all of the items were placed in open bags that were taped up, as apposed to sealed bags as one would expect from a new item. However, everything did look and smell new. Overlooking this packaging issue as well, I proceeded to inflate the ball according to the directions to 80% and then waiting 24 hours prior to inflating it further. Now that the ball is fully inflated, I can see that it is not quite a circle, but more of an oblong/oval-ish shape. In addition, it is not the color advertised in the picture online or on the box, but a MUCH darker, less ascetically pleasing green. I still use it, as the cost of shipping it back for a return was too high, and it is not a terrible product, but I would recommend buying an exercise ball from a store instead of onlineand maybe even going with another brand or size if you don''t want an oval. I do however commend this brand for being environmentally friendly and planting a tree for every purchase. One more positive is that the material seems quite thick and I don''t anticipate it popping anytime soon.
